Story and pictures by Red Sports volunteer, Lai Jun Wei, a student from Innova Junior College. Thanks!

The blazing sun definitely did not deter the athletes of the various schools from giving their best in the Track & Field Championships.

As round after round of jumps were completed, we finally arrived at the finals of the ‘C’ Division Girls High Jump.

Each athlete tried their best to top each others’ standings and some were clearly very disappointed in failing to make the mark. There were even some tears shed at the girls’ High Jump when some of the athletes failed to make it into the top three.

Melissa Wu of Cedar Girls’ triumphed over all others and emerged the gold medallist in the High Jump category. Red Sports caught up with her after the event and asked her about her feelings regarding her win. The shy Secondary 2 student was quite happy even though she did not manage to break the national record of 155cm. She jumped a height of 151cm to clinch the gold medal but failed to clear the 153cm mark which was actually her personal best.

Melissa started the High Jump back in Primary 5 and the former Ai Tong student did not show any signs of disappointment even after her unsuccessful attempt at the record when she clipped the pole at 156cm. But nevertheless, encouragements from her fellow schoolmates of, "Don’t worry, there’s always next year", brought smiles to her face. Good luck to you Melissa!
