Red Sports 5
Wednesday, 26 September 2007 at the adidas Singapore office
For a three-week period, many of you had a lot of fun voting for the Red Sports 5. You chose your best five players to form your dream team. After everyone contacted me via email, I finally got the chance to meet them. I was a little late because of a prior meeting and when I walked in, all the players looked at me in complete silence. I think their first thought was: “Ah, uncle Les is a real human being and not a computer android.”

Singapore recently hosted the 5 Nations Netball Cup and emerged victorious. With national teams from Trinidad & Tobago, Canada, Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka participating, it was no mean feat. The national netballers are the current Asian champions after winning the 6th Asian Netball Championships in 2005, an achievement no other national sports team can boast of. Netball, with an estimated 80,000 active social and competitive players, is the number one girls’ sport in Singapore. The next big assignment for the netballers is the World Netball Championship to be held in Waitakere City, Auckland, New Zealand, 10-17 November 2007. In the meantime, here’s a look back at some of the highlights of the 5 Nations Cup.

For the uninitiated, Canoe Polo is a hybrid sport that fuses the concepts found in water polo, basketball and kayaking to produce a fast paced, high-energy contact team sport. Canoe Polo games are usually held in swimming pools or lakes on a demarcated field of play.

The voting for the Red Sports 5 came to an end on Sunday night and in the close fight for the Centre position, Goh Kong Tat (Catholic High) outlasted Russel Low (Presbyterian High) to win by 28 votes. Randy Ng (Jurong), who was trailing Jabez Su (Catholic High) by only 13 votes with two days to go in the overall vote count, saw his voting support fade away in the end. Jabez finished with 260 to Randy’s 218.
The contest – which was just for the fun of it – received so many votes that I had sleepless nights counting votes.
