Singapore Marathon
2 December 07

Daniel Ling was Singapore’s fastest marathon man yesterday when he finished the 42km race in a time of 2 hours, 46 minutes and 31 seconds. M. Rameshon, 42, the current marathon national record holder with a time of 2:24.22 as well as Ling’s coach and training partner, followed up 5 minutes later in 2:51:22. Ling, who is 29 years of age and teaches physical education at Hwa Chong Institution, set a new personal best time, smashing his old personal best by about seven minutes.

Said Ling after the race: “I was wondering whether I could do a personal best in Singapore because the weather is hot and humid,”. Ling represented Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) in cross-country, the 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m. He also represented the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games in cross-country and the 5,000m.

In the women’s race, Vivian Tang retained her title as Singapore’s fastest woman with a time of 3.01:17, just outside her personal best of 2:58:42 set last year at the Berlin Marathon. This was her 19th marathon for Tang, who represented Singapore in the marathon at the 2003 and 2005 South East Asian (SEA) Games.

“I was looking to do a personal best,” said Vivian after the race. “Actually the race was a lot of pain and I was glad to see the finish line and retain my title.”
