Ochoa increases lead at HSBC Women's Champions

February 29, 2008

Tanah Merah Country Club, Thursday, February 29, 2008 – Mexico's Lorena Ochoa fired a 7-under-par 65 on Friday to increase her lead to seven strokes after two rounds of play at the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore. The 2007 Rolex Player of the Year is now 13-under-par (66-65=131) entering Saturday's third round.

Ochoa, who led by one stroke over Creamer and Japan's Ai Miyazato following the first round, got off to a hot start with a bogey-free 5-under 31 on the front nine of Tanah Merah's Garden Course. She added three more birdies on the back nine, coupled with ‘good' bogey on the hole 13, a par-5, where she took an unplayable lie on her drive and scrambled to roll in a 15-foot putt for six to maintain a comfortable cushion.

"It was great from my driver to the putting," said Ochoa, who now counts 65 as her low round of the season. "I kept hitting my second shots really close and gave myself a lot of birdie chances, so I was very consistent. One of those days you really want to memorize and hopefully repeat."

Sweden's Annika Sorenstam made a second-round charge to move into a tie for second place with Paula Creamer (67-71=138) and South Korean In-Kyung Kim (68-70=138). Sorenstam notched a bogey-free 67 with five birdies - including four consecutive to close the day - putting herself in the final group on Saturday alongside Ochoa and Kim. After winning the SBS Open at Turtle Bay in the opening week of the 2008 LPGA Tour season, Sorenstam finished alone in fourth place last week, increasing her season-leading earnings total to $232,112.

Giving her encouragement on the sidelines were her mother, Janet Yong and sister Jasmine Yong. After her 16-year-old daughter Amelia birdied the 14th hole, Jasmine Yong said, “She has been impressive on certain holes. We’ve encouraged her to have fun and not to pressurise herself even though Amelia set herself the target of making the top 30. We are all very proud of her.”

Amelia, who is a Secondary Four student from St Joseph’s Convent, will tee off tomorrow morning on the 10th hole at 10:25 a.m. with Julieta Granada of Paraguay and Emily Bastel of America. Granada and Bastel are 9-over-par and 10-over-par respectively after two rounds.

Anglican High School, Thursday, February 28, 2008 – Anglican High survived a fierce fourth quarter onslaught by Ngee Ann Secondary to march into the East Zone basketball final. Although Ngee Ann managed to outscore their more illustrious opponent 20-11 in the fourth quarter, they still ended up losing the semi-final by a close 65-70 scoreline.

Lanky Ruben (#11), Ngee Ann’s only Indian player on the team, starred in the final quarter by scoring most of his 11 points in the quarter and grabbing key rebounds. His teammate Tony (#9) also scored 20 points, most of them through jump shots, to keep the score close. However, Ngee Ann lacked composure during the final few minutes and spurned the opportunities that came their way.

Anglican High had used a 24-11 spurt in the second quarter to pull away from Ngee Ann after a tense 15-15 first quarter scoreline. The half time score read 39-26 in Anglican High’s favour.

By the third quarter, Anglican High had extended their lead to 59-45, thanks to some accurate shooting by Teng Rui (#4, AHS). He top scored with 21 points for his team, with teammate Teo Liang Kai (#12) contributing 18 points.

But Ngee Ann was always a threat with their bigger sized players and better rebounding. Centre Scott (#14, NAS) was key for his team in terms of scoring and rebounding. He had a creditable showing, banking in 16 points through put backs.

SMU beat NUS to make rugby history

February 26, 2008

RI field, Saturday, February 23, 2008 – The Singapore Management University (SMU) “City Boys” made history when they beat defending champions the National University of Singapore (NUS) 23-10 convincingly. It was SMU’s first-ever 15-a-side victory over NUS and a satisfying one too after they had suffered a narrow and bitter 7-8 defeat to NUS in the first leg.

The match was held at Raffles Institution's artificial turf and was graced by a big crowd. A lot was at stake for both sides, as SMU needed the win to stay in the contest for the championship, while NUS needed the win to seal the championship off.

At the start, SMU tried to unsettle their opponents by switching the side they were kicking off to. The game proceeded at an intense level and never looked like slowing down. However, SMU looked like the more potent side as they had the lion’s share of possession in the first half. Eager to put points on the board early in the game, SMU’s outrageous 65m penalty attempt by Md Nasir fell short, while both standoff Amos Siow’s drop goal attempts sailed wide.

However, after taking a more patient approach, SMU finally turned pressure into points when they were awarded a penalty for an NUS infringement. SMU’s Amos Siow held his nerves and slotted the penalty to give the City Boys the much needed 3-0 lead.

The competition kicked off with a first, an event called Future Stars designed for the beginner-level skater. This category saw 13 competitors aged between 7 and 10 years of age in the Ladies A event. It is admirable how the youngest skaters in this competition – Claire Casey of Chatsworth International School, Jermaine Seah of Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Primary School (Toa Payoh), Nadja Chong of United World College SEA and from the Future Stars Men event Dylan Jellinek of St Joseph Primary School (Australia) – all aged seven, overcame their nerves and delivered their programs with zest and determination in front of a packed audience of cheering parents and supporters.

Another first this year was the opening of the national championship to foreign competitors. How do local skaters feel about this change from the previously all-Singaporean and Singaporean permanent residents competition?

CCAB, Thursday, February 21, 2008 – In the end, Raffles Institution (RI) had to go through a third consecutive nerve-wracking game to pip Peirce Secondary 38-35 at the buzzer. A last second lay-up and a subsequent free throw by a Raffles player ensured that RI won despite having trailed most of the game.

Once again, Wang Jia Cheng (#15) of RI came through for his team, scoring most of his 11 points in the final quarter. Ravins Cheung (#11) of RI also played well, scoring 13 points for his team.

Peirce only had themselves to blame, after they committed three consecutive costly turnovers in the last few minutes of the game to present RI with a golden opportunity.
