Yeong Wai Mun rows towards Olympic dreams

From the road, it’s easy to miss Pandan Reservoir, an elevated reservoir situated in the midst of an industrial hub in the west. Off Jalan Buroh, hidden from human view, sits the clubhouse of the Singapore Amateur Rowing Association. It was here that I met 26-year-old Yeong Wai Mun, a recent mechanical engineering graduate of the Nanyang Technological University.

Wai Mun had dropped me an email one day to say hello to clarify that there was a difference between paddlers (dragon boaters) and rowers like himself. He did it so thoughtfully and politely that I was intrigued and so was keen to meet up with him to find out more about why he is training full-time in this little-known sport in Singapore.

Having played basketball in River Valley Primary, he spent the subsequent four years in Gan Eng Seng Secondary in the National Cadet Corp. “I wasn’t sports oriented that time,” said Wai Mun. “NCC was prominent at Gan Eng Seng in my time.”

In Jurong Junior College, Wai Mun ran cross-country, then ended up in the artillery vocation during National Service. Then came four years in NTU, graduating in July 2007. “I’ll never forget that day,” said Wai Mun, referring to his graduation. “Kind of a relief that I finished studying.” We can all identify with that.

Singapore, 29 March 2008 – The widely-anticipated Cabinet reshuffle has finally been announced, and among the changes is a promotion for Teo Ser Luck to Senior Parliamentary Secretary. Mr Teo, who is also a Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, will take on an additional portfolio at the Ministry of Transport, while retaining his current portfolio at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS). His promotion will take effect on 1 April 2008.

Mr Teo joined MCYS as Parliamentary Secretary in May 2006 and has focused primarily on the sports portfolio. He chaired the Sporting Culture Committee, which reviewed and put forward recommendations to strengthen and transform Singapore’s sporting culture. He was also an Advisor to Singapore’s Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Bid Committee, which steered Singapore to a successful and historic win to host the inaugural YOG in 2010. At the YOG countdown party at the Padang, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong paid tribute to Teo Ser Luck’s role in securing the win, describing him as having been “living, sleeping, dreaming 5 circles," a reference to the Olympic logo.

Quest to become Singapore’s first woman on Everest begins

March 29, 2008

Departing from Changi Airport's Terminal 2 today, Linda was sent off by family, friends and colleagues from Great Eastern, which is sponsoring the trip. "It’s been a long, tumultuous journey over the past five years," said Linda. "It's surreal that I’m finally looking at the last lap of my dream."

Linda will be arriving at the Mount Everest Base Camp in April, and undergo acclimatisation and training before beginning her ascent. If all goes as planned, she will summit on 15 or 16 May. (Click here to see Linda’s detailed itinerary.)

Sim Phei Sunn, Linda’s friend and fellow mountaineer who was at this morning's send-off, described her as "a very brave and endearing girl. She is one of the toughest persons I know. With her immense mental strength and endurance, I am confident that she will be able to push herself to the maximum to achieve her Everest dream.”

Red Sports will bring you updates in the days to come. In the meantime, check out the The Red Sports Interview with Linda!

In Part 1, we find out how Linda fell in love with mountaineering, the road she has taken towards her current quest, her sponsorship and her training regime. Click here to read Part 1 of Journey to Everest: Linda's Story. Part 2 gives you a foretaste of what her life will be like over the next 6 weeks.

Linda left for Kathmandu on Saturday, March 29, 2008, bringing with her about 40 kg of baggage. Besides mountaineering gear such as an ice axe, carabiners and crampons, Linda, who is vegetarian, will be hauling up food such as freeze-dried staples and – believe it or not – preserved caixin. "It's my comfort food; it makes me very happy," she explained with a grin.

ACS (Independent) overcome Outram to edge closer to water polo final

March 28, 2008

Story contributed by reader Jeremy Bin of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)

water-polo-stock-resize.jpg

ACS(IND), Thursday, March 27, 2008 – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat Outram Secondary 20-2 to edge closer to the Water Polo B Division Championship Final.

With only one win from three matches (lost to ACS(BR) 3-14, HCI 4-6, beat RI 8-4), ACS(IND) still stood a chance to get into the final. All that stood between us and that glory would be to win the final two group stage matches for the season.

Our penultimate match was against Outram Secondary. It was tense, and despite being favoured for the win, overconfidence and complacency could be our undoing.

Montfort outplay Jurong in rugby plate championship

March 28, 2008

SAJC, Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - Montfort Secondary played a well-controlled game to beat Jurong Secondary 26-8 in the National Under-17 Rugby Plate Championship.

The game looked like it would be a closely fought match with Jurong slotting home a drop goal in the early part of the match to go ahead 3-0. But immediately after the 3 points, Montfort struck back after poor tackling by Jurong gave them a chance to score a try down the wing to go ahead 5-3.

A determined Jurong fought bravely back and camped in Montfort’s half for close to 15 minutes. Unfortunately, Jurong’s decision to play a kicking game denied them a chance to retain possession to gain points. Eventually, excellent defending by Montfort led to a turnover ball and a breakaway try by their huge out-center Fenghua (#8) for a 12-3 lead. With confidence growing, Montfort quickly added a simple try and conversion just before the end of the half for a commanding 19-3 lead.

Mention "Mount Everest", and the mind conjures up images of thick snow, sheer rock walls, howling winds and sub-zero temperatures. It's the world's tallest mountain, the mountaineer's dream conquest, and a universal icon of achievement. And if all goes well, Singapore will have her first woman on its summit in May 2008.

Her name is Linda Tan, and she’s a 28-year-old financial advisor. It's been a long journey to this point, and Red Sports caught up with her over coffee one morning to hear all about it.

Polls aren’t the be all and end all of life of course. Netball is a team game as well and so no one person can play well without her teammates.

Basketball powerhouse Unity lose both matches on Day 5 of the National Championships

March 27, 2008

Story contributed by reader Ian Chew

Unity’s #4 (in yellow) gets fouled on her lay up. But her efforts were not enough as SCGS triumphed with an easy 48-30 scoreline. (Photo © Ian Chew)

Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, March 27, 2008 – Singapore Chinese Girls’ School scored a massive 48-30 win over their Unity Secondary counterparts to completely throw open Group D in the first round of the National Girls’ Basketball Championship.

It was also surprising, considering Unity had come into the match as West Zone champions, while SCGS were fighting for their lives after losing their first national round match to Bedok North Secondary.

But there was nothing surprising in the manner of SCGS’ win as they established an early 16-9 first quarter lead and extended their lead throughout the game. They were also certainly helped by a poor shooting display from the Unity forwards and took full advantage with numerous fast break conversions off Unity’s misses.

By Jonathan Wong

Do you want to improve your performance as a runner, swimmer or endurance athlete? Then let's talk about our butts. Improved gluteal (butt) muscles can improve athletic power and prevent injury. Read on if you need to be convinced.

First we'll need to start with some anatomy. (You can skip this and go straight to the exercises section, but working with hundreds of athletes and clients has taught me that the good ones really do try to understand what's going on inside their bodies.)
