Marina Bay, Sunday, 1 June, 2008 – Marcus Ng (12) and Carys Hor (11) won the 1.4km race for the Boys and Girls categories respectively this morning at the Kids Run. Both runners are from Nanyang Primary School's Track and Field team and their coach Mr Chu Seow Beng was all smiles as his pupils took the stage to receive their trophies. "I am very glad. They did extremely well today. We sent the kids to this race mainly for exposure (to bigger national championships next week), and also to inculcate an active, healthy lifestyle. This is very important."

The Kids Run, Singapore's first run exclusively for children, debuted at the Padang with 3,000 kids racing down the Marina Bay precinct on Sunday.

Besides the hordes of children who signed up for the run, schools also sent contingents - School Challenge winner Montfort Primary with the largest team of 213 students, followed by Naval Base Primary with 195 students, including 20 special needs children. Mrs Elizabeth Poey, Principal of Naval Base Primary, beamed with pride as her students ran past the finishing line. "Sports is for everyone. I'm proud of all of them. I hope to see more events like this for children to help nurture a fitness culture, along with self-confidence and self-esteem among the students," said Mrs Poey.

Mrs Shirley Foo, the Physical Education teacher leading the Montfort Primary students, explained how the race indeed boosted their confidence: "When we first told the kids about the race, their initial reaction was fear. They kept saying ‘I cannot win’, and they got the misconception that they have to come here and win. But we told them no, as long as you come here and can finish the race…every one is a winner." She added after the race: "Today the kids are enthusiastic, they are in high spirits, in fact, many of them said that the distance was too short!"
