Calvin: Sense of brotherhood with the rest of the players the best feeling for the camp! (Photo 1 by Ian Chew)

Watching both Shengyu (SY) and Calvin Chia (CC) struggle against much better opponents at the adidas camp, I was actually glad! Not that I’m a sadist, but the intensity of play in Dallas showed just how much more they needed to improve.

ACS(I) is the first school to hold the rugby grand slam but some folks disagree

August 30, 2008

After the recent C Division Rugby Championship final in which the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat St. Andrew’s Secondary 39-0, I had written the following statement:

“ACS(I) won the A and B Division titles this year and are now the first school in Singapore school history to hold the A, B and C titles in a single calendar year.”

Some readers take issue with this.

August 30, 2008

“I sincerely apologise for causing any grievances, any stress.”

So said the President of the Singapore Table Tennis Lee Bee Wah, last night.

So finally, a week after the furore began, Ms Lee has done the needful and apologised. For those who are wondering what happened, Ms Lee had blown up in Beijing after the number one male player, Gao Ning, had played his game without a coach. He lost the game badly and was in tears after. Ms Lee said the team manager Antony Lee was responsible and should be fired.

Time for new STTA regime to decide what are its values

August 30, 2008

Commentary by reader Singapore Sports Fan

I think I've found what I consider to be the best letter that has been written about the entire STTA saga to date. I spotted it in an edition of The New Paper, and I just found myself nodding my head again and again as I read it.

It's by TNP reader Mark Koh Fu Ming and it distills the controversy to its very essence – a clash of values:

"I refer to the article "Can of worms already there" (The New Paper, 28 Aug) on the table tennis saga.

Amid the hullabaloo over table tennis, the state of Singapore badminton will in time also come into question. Our two best singles players – Ronald Susilo and Xing Aiying – did not make it past the first round in Beijing. While Ronald had to face Lee Chong Wei in the first round, Xing Aiying fell unexpectedly to a lower-ranked player.

We recap what happened with both players at the Beijing Olympics.

Up-and-coming thrower Scott Wong continued his amazing record-breaking form this season when he broke a 21-year-old national discus (1.5kg) record set by the legendary James Wong at the recent Asean Schools Track and Field Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam.

The 18-year-old Hwa Chong Institution student hurled 53.88m to break the Asean Schools record of 52.11m set by Thailand's Sathaporn Japorn en route to winning the event.

Delta Sports Complex, Wednesday, August 6, 2008 – In yet another exciting finish to the C Division Hockey Championship, Seng Kang Secondary pipped hot favourites St. Andrew’s Secondary 1-0 claim the title. A missed penalty and a last-minute save stood out in this exciting encounter between the two teams.

Both teams started the game evenly matched with the attack swinging from end to end. Both set of plaers played at a fast paced tempo with slick passing in between. The Saints were awarded the first short corner but their first attack came to naught. The tackling by the two teams was pretty rough with plenty of jostling and shoving for the ball. It wasn’t long before the rough play caught the attention of the referees.

The table tennis saga is still front and centre in the national mainstream media. For those who haven’t been following the saga, here is a brief recap.

Singapore’s number one table tennis player, Gao Ning, played his first game of the Olympics without a coach by his side. He expected a coach to be there for him, even telling the umpire one was coming along. When none showed up, he became flustered and promptly crashed out to a lower-ranked China-born Croatian player he was expected to beat comfortably. Gao Ning was in tears after the game, and claimed that he was abandoned by his team manager and head coach in favour of the women players.

With the Youth Olympic Games coming up, a reader encourages our basketball officials to improve their standards

August 28, 2008

A reader felt strongly enough about officiating standards to write to me about the recent controversial win by Woodlands Ring Secondary over Hwa Chong Institution in the National C Division Boys Basketball Championship. For those who are new to this story, timekeeping irregularities and umpiring decisions saw Woodlands Ring win the game with a last second 3-pointer that was released after the buzzer went off (see video below). HCI filed an appeal but lost. Woodlands Ring went on into the next round but were knocked at the quarter-final stage and did not make the semi-finals.

Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 – Anglican High School used a pivotal 21-2 run in the third quarter to effectively seal the national inter-school basketball final match against Unity Secondary. The gap proved too big for a demoralised Unity as Anglican High subsequently cruised to a 76-61 win to end a 13-year wait for a National C Division Boys Basketball Championship title.

Anglican High forward Sherwin Yen was instrumental for his team during this period, driving strongly to the basket for 15 of his 31 points as well as racking up assists for his teammates. He was later named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his efforts.

Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 – Unity Secondary beat Dunman Secondary 63-49 to capture the C Division Girls Basketball Championship title this afternoon.

Unity effectively shut down Dunman’s attack with their harassing presses from the start and never allowed their opponents to find any shooting or passing rhythm. Playing in a national final in front of so spectators many also contributed to jitters and Dunman committed many unforced errors with many passes never finding their intended recipients.
