Tanjong Pagar CSC and Teck Ghee CSC engage in basket-boxing in National Basketball League
By Les Tan
Singapore Basketball Centre, Saturday, September 27, 2008 – According to Red Sports readers, a huge fight erupted between Tanjong Pagar CSC and Teck Ghee CSC at the Singapore Basketball Centre yesterday in a Group A game that tipped off at 7pm.
Apparently, chairs and helmets were weapons of choice as both teams fought it out and there was blood on the floor after it was all over.
Said reader Meng Ming in the chat box: “Yeah, real big fight. My team was playing on the other court. Our ref actually stopped our game to watch their fight.”
According to a reader in the tag box, what triggered the fight was rough play with a Teck Ghee player throwing elbows here and there. The Tanjong Pagar bench was infuriated and the Teck Ghee player went over to argue with them, leading to the fight.
However, another reader disagreed. “The fight wasn’t triggered by (the) Teck Ghee player throwing elbows here and there. Tanjong Pagar players were rather over physical. If you’d only count how many times Teck Ghee players were knocked off the ground.”
On why the referees didn’t intervene, the same reader said: “I think nobody would want to step in. Someone bothered to call the police though. By the way the refs were okay. Most fouls were called but those were really hard fouls and then trash talking came on. It was actually a heated argument until number 9 of Tanjong Pagar kicked a Teck Ghee player in the stomach. Then everyone rushed over.”
Regardless of who started and what triggered it all, this is the second huge fight to break out in the National Basketball League in successive years. The league is run by the Basketball Association of Singapore. Last year’s fight night was between the Home United team and the SAFSA team. That’s quite ironic, considering Home United are funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs and SAFSA are funded by the Ministry of Defence, the two ministries responsible for internal and external law and order respectively. SAFSA were demoted to Division 2 while Home United continue to play in the top division.
Perhaps the NBL also stands for “National Boxing League”. The least they could have done was to tell us they were planning to fight. We could have watched two sports in one.
hahaha… who was this writer? its quite hilarious the way the writer wrote… haha
Hello Tang En. It’s just tongue-in-cheek of course. I don’t condone fighting. They should ban the ones who started the fight.
Tanjong Pagar happens to be under the jurisdiction of MM…while
Teck Ghee is under PM !
The players, officials and others involved should have been more circumspect.
any video?
Am I surprised? No.
Will BAS (REALLY) put the house in order? No.
What will happen to NBL next year? Fight again lor. Maybe only the weapons will be different.
NBL? National Boxing League, National Bullying League, National Born Loser, Notorious Bengs & Lians.
Hey i was there after my swim…I just walk in and watch the match.
T.Pagar win every match but the way they play really got problem. Elbow here and there. If ppl there watch the match will know. Teck Ghee players all young and small in size kena whack till jialat.Even outsider involve in the fight cos really “Kan bu guo yan”. Polices arrive after the fight…. Really hope no such thing will happen next time. Btw the female ref.din do a good job during the match. A lot of Foul din stand in.
The problem is back to Singapore refs again. Their standards too low. I noticed:
1. Most don’t use unsportsmanship foul for intentional fouls. I dun know why?
2. Most don’t give foul for unintentional fouls or knocks. Maybe no one teach them this.
3. They dun have a eyes degree report, they dun have a focus program and test, and they simply lack confidence.
4. They are running out of refs.
More fights are good, hopefully BAS can get into the news one day. If nothing really bad happened, then government will not look into it and do something to help/change Singapore basketball.
I think this is how Singapore worked.
I think some time basketball is more towards physical side.. so there is elbow here and there is normal, i think if any side playing until too violent ref shld step in and call fouls to stop arguement and fight. and i think is teck ghee is too unsportment le cause i was standing there witness the whole things tpagar player is trying to stop the fight by asking the teck ghee player to go back to the sit end up i saw 1 of the teck ghee player grab a chair nearby and whack onto the t.pagar no 10 then the fight started.. they shouldnt use weapon wat if the person die .. teck ghee player are too young realli dunno how to think .
I was there at the match that night too, i too think T.Pagar play rough too, i keep saw teck ghee players being knock on the floor, some more the teck ghee player all looks so young and skinny. And the referee too, doesn’t really do their job at all, they didn’t help in stopping the fight at all. Even when T.Pagar coach scold the referee that why they didn’t stop the fight, the referee replied and say they can’t do anything also… What a noob referee…
please do not mislead the readers. yes tanjong pagar player (11) was trying to stop the fight after tp 9 kicked teck ghee player in the stomach. i saw some outsider coming in with a helmet and hitting tp number 10, led to his head bleeding. and the fight started cause a ball came flying from somewhere i couldn’t see cause of the rumble and hit a girl. please be wary of what you’re claiming, cause somebody’s head bled. if a police case is lodged, i don’t think you’ll want to give this as your statement. just a friendly reminder by the way, no ill intentions yo. (:
Sandra. your comment abit superficial. Its a contact sports and sure there bound to be some contacts. pple who plays basketball knows and should experience b4. Inevitable. Yes. teck ghee players are young, but they shouldnt resorted into using helmet and chairs for the fight. if you are the one facing them. will u whack them first before they whack you or u will just stand there let them hit because they are young. Am not siding on any teams. just my 2 cents worth.
at that point before the fight started. i was standing at the other court 2 watching. TP was trying to break the scuffle and asked the no 18 to go back. but he refused and got aggressive. thats when his teammates rush over with helmets and chairs. Helmets and chairs where flying and swinging around. couldnt really see how the fight started as it was too messy. But i saw Tp no 10 being attacked by 3 teck ghee players and TG no 12 was holding on to the chair and hit him to his head that caused bleeding. TP no 10 snatched the chair over from him and start swinging to wield off the attackers. at the same time i think TP no 14 was attacked from behind by both helmets and chairs. my heart was with him when the helmet swung to his head twice then later a chair twice again to his back. i thought he would be dead. but apparently he wasnt reacting to the hits at all he only turned and stared at them and continue stopping the fight. Poor TP no 14. lol.
in fact, if you sat down for the whole game and watch the match between TP and TG. TG was the ones sparked off the rough play. TG players were actually pushing and sticking their legs out to trip players during TP fastbreaks. Some of the pushing were actually caught by the referee.
1. Push a player off the line when he is dribbling near the side line.
2. push the player to knock against the point guard during a screening play.
and many more.
LOL,passerby, ARE YOU SURE that you’re watching court 2’s match? And why is everyone saying they were watching court 2’s match? You sound like a freaking reporter who’s so detailed in his article. whatever number from where whack whoever number from there, who started the rough plays all these, you can name it all! I can see that you have great eyesight! court 2’s seating is so far away! HAHA! And looking at what you’ve written, you really sound like you’re from TP. well well.. tentatively, i strongly feel the empires could have prevented all these nonsense. Just my 0.255 cents.
and ya, my friend were mentioning something like this tp number 6, refuses to shut up, hurling nonsense and insults to someone? to number 18 or the whole tg team? that blew number 18 off. looks like their intercon games will be affected too..
Lol. bluesports. I was at Whye Nam bench =X. i just need to turn around i can see already. i think y everyone says they are watching court 2 game is because whye nam vs meng ming is much more exciting. Prolly thats the reason. The game was stopped because of the fight also.
wow. bluesports u also got some insights news ya.. well. i didnt know the root of the cause and how it started and this no 6 player’s hurling. now atleast u filled me in and i almost got the full story. LOL. When i turned i already saw them pushing no 18.
ya i agreed with bluesports that the referee should had done something from the start when no18 was at TP’ bench. but sadly they did not.
some players are actually told to do these “dirty moves” by their coaches. so its not actually only the players/referees to blame.
Even if coach told the players to do dirty move, if the referee is alert enough to prevent it, the fight will never had occur
Everyone shld be objective in passing comments. Jus because someone commented on wat they saw, and happenes to be to the other team’s disadvantage, the rest of the pple will say he is from tat team. Then wats the whole point of this “comments” thingie?
However, everyone shld bear in mind when reading such articles and comments that no one can tell exactly what happened unless they are involved or had witness the entire incident. These pple passing comments could be either playing at the other side of the court, whose game was stopped only after the fight broke out or watching the “more exciting” match. So who exactly saw how everything started?
Its unfair for both teams if one have passed subjective remarks misleading other readers..
No matter what.. “Being young” should not be gd enough to justify such uncouth sportsmanship in teams. Its an insult to basketball and to sports! To hit pple with CHAIRS, HELMETS and even a GIRL are acts of hooligans.. NBL do not need such teams.
Ha, passerby, taking a swipe at tg again huh? Well well well, just saw from bas’s webby, tg was dq, and tp’s not. All the best to beng hiang’s players, Tl, jx, and company, and the old uncles, who whined so loud, and hide so fast, to win the champion. =)
And i agree with far sighted, don mislead readers please. Fighting with weapons is simply unacceptable in Singapore. We should fight with bare hands, it will be easier to get away with it. And not mentioning throwing a ball at poor little defenceless girl. ^^
hey bluesports. chill man. i was just stating a fact of wat i saw with my own eyes. stop targetting me leh… i dun even know any players from either side which u seems like u know them.
haha.. Im pretty chilled.. They are not my friends.. Those are my friend’s friends. Don worry, arrow’s not pointing at anyone. =)
Teck Ghee players….i have nth to say….but if another fight where to break out again, best of luck to TG…
53- Don’t talk like as if they started the fight first.
Seems like they will be sending a formal appeal letter, as well as a complaint letter. The way BAS has handle this case is unacceptable. Practicing favoritism? It always have been this case since the early days. That’s why Singapore’s basketball will never get stronger. And from the looks of it, the next 20 years will be the same.
Heard some tp and tg players got banned from matches. Any ideas?
wow, 53 seems like trying to put all the blames on teck ghee csc arhz
it always need two hands to clap, both team haf their own supporter and the reason tt they nt the one start the fight, but seriously only they themself noe the ans to this
it’s nt up to us to judge but think of it, y only the teck ghee csc ppl being band? izit because they gt ppl hospitalise? if u dare to kick a person better be prepared to kana one gd one lol, but the in the end, bas need to be fair, safsa and home u y onli safsa ppl kana band?? fav?? disappointed in BAS!!
