One of the joys of covering the local sports scene is this – the people you cover actually live on this island.

I used to cover the English Premier League and after prattling on about the different teams, you go home and realise the English teams don’t care about what you have to say about them in any case. You can provide insightful analysis, ask thoughtful questions, make provocative comments, but all for what? It was like shouting into the wind.

The slow decline of newspapers and television

Managers who need to figure out where to spend their limited sports marketing dollars would not have missed the war of words between The Straits Times and MediaCorp this week about their respective readership and viewership figures.

What started it all?

The Straits Times published a full-page advertisement* highlighting itself and three other papers (My Paper, Shin Min, The Business Times) for having an increased reach year-on-year. It cites as source the 2008 Nielsen Media Index survey**. (The New Paper (TNP) is absent from this ad because its readership has fallen since last year.) The same advertisement points out that the reach of free-to-air television channels (Channel 5, U, 8, CNA) has fallen anywhere from 1.9% for CNA to 3% for Channel U.

The organisers of the upcoming Singapore Marathon are understandably over the moon that 50,000 folks have signed up to run the various distances (42km, 21km, 10km). While it will make for lovely crowd shots of packed streets, and bring in a conservative estimate of S$1.5 million in registration fees alone (assuming $30 per head), runners may end up being walkers for part of the route.

Singapore footballers suffer on and off the pitch in AFC U-16 Championship

October 28, 2008

By Les Tan

There must be something in the way we live in Singapore. Too clean? Too hygienic? Whatever the reason, it was enough for five players in the under-16 national football team to end up seeing what most don’t want to see when in a foreign country – the inside of a hospital.

The U-16 football team went to Uzbekistan for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship earlier this month and before the team even played their first game against Uzbekistan, five footballers were sent to hospital for fever and diarrhoea. The under-strength team then got hammered 0-7 by Uzbekistan.
