18 players made it through a trial to qualify for the second round draft of the adidas Nations League recently. 5 of the 18 were eventually selected by Blacks coaches Mr Andre Wong and Mr Hsu Tung Ching.
“The trial was really competitive as so many players fought for their chances to get drafted by the coaches,” said Ng Hui Wen of Victoria Junior College. “I did not expect to make it as there were so many players to compete with for a spot.”
A total of 65 players showed up at the trial for a shot at getting drafted in the second round.
The Blacks squad are made up of players mainly from the eastern part of Singapore.
“We’ve got players from VJC, TJC, CCHS, DMN, NASS and AHS. We have been watching them play for the past few years during the east zone competitions, they are the best in the east for this age group!” said coach Andre Wong.
Added coach Wong: “The strongest point for our team is, the players know each other very well on the court. Cause they have been playing against each other for many years. Plus, some of them are currently National under-18 and under-16 players. With their experience and skills, we believe that we can build a strong team. The only concern we have for them now, is the number of training sessions we have, and most of them are committed to their school team’s and National team’s training, it would be tough for everyone to turn up on the same day!”
Macus Yap, one of the five who made the second round draft, was just happy to get in.
“The Blacks squad is a very talented team and it feels great to be able to play with my school teammates and former teammates again.”
Second-round draftee Wee Seng Cheong also echoed the same sentiment.
“I am very happy to make it through the second round draft. Most of them are really good, hence I was actually quite surprised that I actually can make it in. After I was selected, I hoped that I woulc make it in to the Blacks squad as most of my closer teammates are inside, such as Adam Goh and Scott (Driscoll).”
With 65 players gunning for spots in the trial, playing time was at a premium. David Aw Jun Xian, who also made it through in the second round draft, said “that there was very little playing time for everyone.” He wasn’t expecting to make the cut and “was just trying my luck,” according to him.
