Thursday, April 16, 2009 – The 50th National Inter-School Track-and-Field Championships is into its fourth day and the finals for several field events and jump events are over.
In the divisional rankings, Hwa Chong Institution is leading the standings across all the boys’ divisions – A, B and C. HCI lead the A Division with 59 (two-point lead over Raffles Institution), the B Division with 83 (53-point lead over Catholic High) and the C Division with 71 (35-point lead over Catholic High).
The A Division girls’ category is currently led by Raffles Institution with 43 points and HCI trail them with 31 points.
The B Division girls’ category is led by the Singapore Sports School with 26 points with CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ Scjpp; trailing by two points.
Cedar Girls’ Secondary and CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ are locked on the same number of points – 26 – in the battle for the C Division girls’ championship title.
It has been a long week of competition for the athletes, coaches and officials. The week of competition closes on Friday with the following events to watch out for – the 800m finals for the boys across all divisions, the javelin finals for the B girls and triple jump finals for B boys and C girls in the morning; the 3000m finals for B and C girls, as well as the steeplechase finals for the B boys (2000m) and A boys (3000m) in the afternoon.
With only one track event concluded so far – the A Division boys’ 5000m – the divisional rankings may still see many changes and it remains to be seen whether HCI can hang on to pole position at the top of the boys’ rankings.
When the competition resumes after the weekend, the pressure will be turned up a notch as the athletes realise they are no longer running for qualification in the heats but for actual points and medals as spectators look forward to finals galore.
