Thursday, April 23, 2009 – The 50th National Inter-School Track and Field Championships enter the home-straight with its final day of competition today. After seven days of competition, the divisional rankings have begun to take good shape as Red Sports takes a look at the contenders for the various divisional titles.

The A Division boys’ championship is the most keenly-fought of all divisions, as only four points separate Hwa Chong Institution – in first place at the moment with 128 points – from Raffles Institution who are sitting in third place with 124 points. Sandwiched between them is Victoria Junior College with 125 points.

With 185 points over five events at stake in the A Division boys’ championship on the final day, there promises to be much shuffling in the standings as these three schools go head-to-head out on the track to determine who goes back with the championship trophy.

In the other boys’ divisions, the B Division championship sees Hwa Chong Institution topping the table quite comfortably with 118 points. Though it is still mathematically possible for Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Singapore Sports School, who are both tied in second place on 63 points, to catch Hwa Chong Institution, that would mean a rather phenomenal effort from the athletes of either one of those two schools.

Below Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and Singapore Sports School are also four other schools – St. Joseph’s Institution, Catholic High School, Raffles Institution and Victoria School – who are still within touching distance of them to ensure six-way fight for the second and third places. The difference between the second and seventh place is only 20 points.

Hwa Chong Institution C boys are leading the C Division with 97 points. Singapore Sports School and Catholic High are in second and third with 72 points and 70 points respectively. Victoria School is slightly behind in fourth place with 63 points.

In the girls’ divisional championships, the closest race is in the B Division girls’ category where 19 points separate the Singapore Sports School, in first place with 92 points, from Cedar Girls’ Secondary in third, with 73 points.

Traditional powerhouse CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School is slotted between the two schools with 84 points as they seek to win both the B and C Divisions this year after coming up second in both divisions last year. They lead the C Division girls’ standings currently with 121 points – 41 more than second-placed Cedar Girls’ Secondary, the school they lost to last year for the C girls’ title. Singapore Sports School is a further 23 points back in third place with 58 points.

The final day of races promises many exciting races at Choa Chu Kang stadium from 2.00pm onwards. The blue-riband 100m (all divisions) races will start the day’s action and that will be followed by the finals for the 1500m (boys), 800m (girls), the 4X100m and 4x400m relays, the high jump (A boys), discus (B girls) and javelin (C boys).

Stay tuned for all the action and results from the final day of competition as Red Sports seeks to bring you the stories.
