Singapore Indoor Stadium, Thursday, June 11, 2009 - World number nine and eighth seed Xie Xingfang progressed to the quarter-final of the Singapore Badminton Open after beating Japan's highest ranked women's player Ai Goto in straight sets 21-19, 21-14.
Despite trailing by as many as four points at 7-11 in the first set, Xie Xingfang remained within striking distance, making her height advantage count against her shorter opponent and took the lead at 16-15 before claiming the set 21-19. The second set belonged to her as she never trailed and even scored seven consecutive points to lead by as many as nine points at 14-5. She eventually won the second set 21-14.
Xie Xingfang will next play Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand in the quarter-final after the latter beat Rachel van Cutsen of Netherlands 21-6, 20-22, 21-13.
