Singapore women hammer Malaysia in rugby test match
Yio Chu Kang Stadium, Saturday, October 3, 2009 – Singapore hammered Malaysia 63-0 in a warm-up for the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup Asian qualifying playoffs.
Singapore scored 11 tries against the Malaysians, who were playing their first-ever test match.
There is a single slot left available at the Women’s Rugby World Cup and Singapore will have to playoff against Japan in early November. Should our Singapore team clear that hurdle, they will come up against either Kazakhstan or Hong Kong to win that coveted final slot.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup will be held in England in August 2010. England, New Zealand, France, South Africa, Canada, USA, Ireland, Wales, Sweden, Scotland and Australia are the 11 teams who have already qualified.
Singapore’s Leung Wai Mun scored a hat-trick of tries but came away with a broken finger and had to undergo surgery.
Singapore will now play away against Hong Kong on Saturday and the Hong Kong squad is expected to be tougher opponents than Malaysia.
On November 4th, Singapore will play Japan while Hong Kong will take on Kazakhstan. Both games are scheduled to be played at the Republic Polytechnic (timing not available).
The final will be played at the Padang as part of the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Rugby 7s on Friday, November 6th, at 7.30pm. The 3rd/4th playoff will kick off earlier at 5.30pm.
