Singapore, Friday, May 7, 2010 – Never have so many people been so eager to hand over so much money to so few.
It is finally confirmed that the football World Cup will hit Singapore’s television screens after FIFA agreed to a deal with SingTel and StarHub with just over a month to the start of the event in South Africa.
Your normal life can now resume and the PAP may just call an election soon. After all, the fate of the World Cup broadcast was discussed in no less than the august chambers of the Singapore parliament (like there was nothing else better to talk about. You know, education, housing, to name a few).
It will cost you $70.62 on or before May 31st and $94.16 after that date. (If you see $66 plastered all over the place, read the fine print – GST.) All 64 matches will be available.
MediaCorp, which operates the free-to-air channels, is negotiating to show the opening game, the semi-finals and the final. The opening game between hosts South Africa and Mexico is on June 11th, 10pm (Singapore time).
To think it used to cost just $25 to watch it in 2006. The 2010 prices are a 180% increase in four years.
