By now, everyone in the footballing world has probably seen Robert Green’s bad goalkeeping error for England in their 1-1 opening draw with the USA.
A tame shot by Clint Dempsey seemed covered by Green. However, the ball took a deflection off the right hand of Green and bounced into goal.
USA goalkeeper Tim Howard, who was sympathetic, said it had to do with the new adidas football, the ‘Jabulani‘, according to media reports.
“He made some good saves but this ball is doing silly things and at this level these things happen,” said the Everton goalkeeper. “I feel terrible for him, but in goalkeeping you have to have broad shoulders,” Howard was quoted as saying.
Well, the goalies can complain all they like. The more goals the better, I say. The Uruguay vs France game SHOULD have been played with a supermarket plastic ball because that game was going nowhere.
The Argentina vs Nigeria game, “an absorbing contest”, according to the commentator, could have done with more than just one measly goal.
Football is about goals. The lack of it is not absorbing — it is boring.
