Wednesday, September 1, 2010 — The Lion City will host its first ever inter-city rivalry race in October with the launch of the Nike City 10K Singapore, a unique celebration of sport that connects and inspires young runners here to lace up against runners in neighbouring city Kuala Lumpur for a good cause.
Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are two out of the 22 cities around the world that will be hosting the newly introduced Nike City 10K this year. In addition to the physical race, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will be challenging each other in a virtual race, where runners in each city can clock mileage for their City from now till 31st Oct. All they need is a Nike+ SportBand to sync their mileage on Nikeplus.com.sg.
The city with the most kilometres by the end of October will win a USD30,000 donation from Nike to their respective charities. Runners in Singapore will raise funds for the Singapore Children’s Society, while runners in Kuala Lumpur will run to earn a donation for Hope Worldwide Kuala Lumpur.
The physical race will take place in both cities in the month of October. The Nike City 10K flags off in Kuala Lumpur on 10th October and 24 October for Singapore. Due to the overwhelming registration response for the Nike Human Race in Singapore for the last two years, this year’s Nike City 10K Singapore will expand its capacity from 10,000 to 12,000 runners.
“We understand how our runners embrace music and hope to give them an unparalleled running experience by combining their love for music and sport. City runs are increasingly popular among runners, and the Nike City 10K will energize runners even more with a unique city challenge against our neighbours in Malaysia,” said Vijaya Kumar Jayaraj, Singapore Marketing Manager.
Registration for the Nike City 10K opens today, as runners can sign up for either the Open category (Men / Women) or Under 25 category (Men / Women). Young runners can also sign up for the School category, which is open to runners from secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics and universities. The registration fee of $25 (for runners 24 years and below) or $35 (for runners 25 years and above) before GST includes a Nike City 10K race t-shirt with a pre-printed number bib and a finisher’s award for all participants who complete the race.
More details on the city race route will be released at a later date.
