India, Tuesday, October 5, 2010 — The pair of Gai Bin and Nigel Lim amassed 1094 points to win Singapore’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 50m Pistol final. They beat the Indian pair of Omakr Singh and Deepak Sharma by seven points. The Trinidad and Tobago pair of Peter Daniel and Richard Allen were third with 1081 points.

“I cannot explain what is going through my mind right now but all I know is that I am proud to have won our first gold for Singapore and am proud that we will be hearing the Majulah Singapura later,” said Nigel, who put together a 95-92-90-90-90-93 series for a 550 total which was the highest individual score amongst all the shooters in the final.

His partner Gai Bin came up with a 95-90-85-95-91-88 effort for a 544 points total.

“This is a great feeling for me because it’s my first Commonwealth Games and I only took up this discipline about two and a half years ago. I am glad that we were able to pull through and win the gold even though I feel that I’m not near my best yet,” said Gai Bin.

“This is one of the surprise medals which we were looking forward to and it is great for us to start Day One of shooting competition with a gold,” added Team Singapore Chef-de-Mission Annabel Pennefather.

Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said: “My heartiest congratulations to Swee Hon and Gai Bin. Their clinching of Team Singapore’s first medal – and a gold at that – is a tremendous achievement. This is a great start for Team Singapore, and strong inspiration for our athletes to deliver their best at the Games.”
