NUS in straight sets victory over NTU in SUniG women’s volleyball

National University of Singapore, Wednesday, September 29, 2010 — Despite changing venues for a game that was supposed to be held at the Singapore Management University (SMU), the National University of Singapore (NUS) women’s volleyball team managed to defeat Nanyang Technological University (NTU) 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) last week.

This was despite NUS opting to field their fringe players in this game to allow them to gain match experience, after overcoming their earlier opponents in the competition with relative ease.

The first set saw NTU nicking the first points off their opponents, but NUS managed to level at 6-6 midway through. Lin Ruoci (NUS #2) was in good form setting up chances for Janet Wong (#14) to spike home several important points as they conquered the first set 25-16.

The second set was no better for NTU as they only managed to gain their first points of the set only after NUS had steered ahead with five.

However, a brave fight back saw the NTU players narrow the deficit to three at 18-21. However, NUS proved too dominant as they took the second set 25-20 in the end.

In the end, there was no way back into the game for the fast-tiring NTU, with NUS taking the last point of the game through Janet Wong’s (#14) block close to the net to claim the last set 25-21.

“We did not do as well as we had expected,” commented NTU coach Ang Wee Seng. “(Our opponents) played a comfortable game having already beaten two schools earlier on and I believe they were better because they played a more relaxed game.”

“However I feel that this tournament will provide good preparation for the future IVP tournament for my team after learning from our mistakes in this game,” he added

“My team played an excellent game, applying what they were told to do during training. They managed to keep their emotions and stress levels in check and supported each other during the game,” quipped NUS coach Yu Han.

“I definitely feel that the (SUniG) tournament will provide a good platform for my team in the IVP games in the future, even though I have some of my players graduating before then,” the NUS coach added on the positives she can take from the Games.
