India, Thursday, October 14, 2010 — Singapore picked up another two table tennis gold medals today at the 19th Commonwealth Games. Yang Zi beat fellow Singaporean Gao Ning 4-1 to capture the men’s singles gold at the 19th Commonwealth Games while in the women’s doubles, another all-Singapore final saw Sun Beibei and Li Jiawei beat Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu 3-2.
Singapore swept six out of the seven gold medals available in table tennis. It was almost like our own national championship with only Singaporeans playing in four finals — the men’s and women’s singles finals, as well as the women’s doubles and mixed doubles finals.
The one gold that got away was in the men’s doubles when Gao Ning and Yang Zi went down 2-3 to the Indian pair of Sharath Kamal Achanta and Subhajit Saha.
In the women’s singles, four Singaporeans filled the semi-final slots. Feng Tianwei eventually won gold when she beat teammate Yu Mengyu 4-1 in the final while Wang Yuegu took bronze by beating teammate Sun Beibei. At the medal ceremony, the spectators were treated to the rare sight of three Singapore flags getting raised.
?”Firstly I am happy that I am able to win a gold in the singles event here at the Commonwealth Games. This is my first outing at the Commonwealth Games,” said Tianwei. “Looking back, I can say that many of the athletes here have improved and are always getting better. For me, I will have to concentrate on the Asian Games next.”
Li Jiawei also achieved a personal milestone when she won her 10th Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s doubles final.
“I actually have never kept track of the number of medals I have won at the Commonwealth Games. I only focus on doing well at each competition I enter. I am satisfied with my form, considering that I have only been back in competition for half a year following the birth of my son, who turned a year old yesterday,” said Jiawei.
In all, Singapore’s paddlers won six gold, five silver and one bronze for a total of 12 medals.
The paddlers are expected back on Friday, October 15th on SQ407. Their arrival time is 7.30am at Terminal 3 (Arrival Hall, Belt 41-42).
