Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, 10 Nov, 2010 — The Institute of Technical Education men’s team bounced back from a first-quarter deficit to beat Ngee Ann Polytechnic comprehensively 81-55. With the win, ITE placed themselves in the driving seat for the Polytechnic-Institute of Technical Education (POL-ITE) basketball title with four wins in four games.

Yet it was the Ngee Ann Poly team which enjoyed the brighter start.

Pek Jiarong, Ngee Ann’s point guard, scored 9 points in the first quarter, including a 3-pointer to put his team up 20-15. Ngee Ann looked on course to achieve their second win of the tournament, after beating defending champions Temasek Polytechnic 70-42 in their opening match.

Not to be outdone, ITE’s forward Tan Jinghong, also a member of the local professional Singapore Slingers team, scored 9 consecutive points at one stage to lead his team to a 37-29 lead at the half. He led all scorers with 19 points.

ITE never looked back after that, extending their lead in each subsequent quarter for a blowout win. ITE’s guard Lim Fang Ching also contributed a vital 15 points for his team, including three from long range.

The participating teams are left with a final group game at Republic Polytechnic on Friday, November 12th, to determine the winners of this year’s POL-ITE basketball championship.
