Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 — Jurong West Secondary beat Nanyang Girls’ High 37-26 to register their second Round 2 round win in Group Y of the National B Division GIrls’ Basketball Championship.

The loss meant the end of the championship run for Nanyang Girls’.

Nanyang Girls’ High trailed Jurong West by two points (11-13) at half time in this match between two West Zone teams. However it was the third quarter that got the spectators on their feet with Jurong West pulling ahead to lead 23-15.

Nanyang High fought on despite the widening disparity in points but Jurong West came back with a stifling defense to keep their lead.

Joey Tan of Nanyang Girls’ had a 3-pointer but it was not enough to turn the tables and Jurong West eventually clinched victory with a score of 37-26.

Both teams put on a strong fight, showing strong teamwork and good sportsmanship with Nanyang rueing their missed passes and under-basket shots which they were unable to turn into points.

When asked what cost them the game, Joey Tan of the Nanyang Girls’ basketball team replied: “We didn’t treasure the ball and were not
able to turn it into points. We prepared quite well for this game because it was a do or die match but the pressure was on us because we had to win this game to go to the next round.”

Postscript: Jurong West went on to qualify for the semi-finals of the National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship where they lost 48-50 to Dunman Secondary.
