Kallang Sports Complex, Tuesday, August 16, 2011 — Crescent Girls’ School beat River Valley High 3-2 to win the National C Division Softball Championship final.

The final was the second meeting this year between the two teams and Crescent had won the previous game 10-0. While Crescent wanted to repeat the feat, RV did not allow that to happen so easily, putting up a strong fight which was proven by the scoreline.

The match started with RV batting. However, they were no match for the Crescent pitcher and finished the top of the inning with no runs. In the next half of the inning, Crescent came up to bat and scored two runs.

With Crescent leading 2-0, it was an uphill task for RV as the Crescent team allowed no runs. However, RV did likewise and both teams changed sides with the score unchanged.

Crescent held the 2-0 lead into the fourth inning when RV scored a single run to make it 2-1. Crescent failed to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Into the fifth and last inning, RV came out all guns blazing as they batted and scored yet another run. With the score at 2-2, two outs, runners on third and second, things were looking decidedly rosy for RV.

Then disaster struck for Crescent. Immediately after delivering a strike, the Crescent pitcher had a sudden cramp in her calf. It was several tense minutes as a medic was called in.

Just as it seemed like the tables had turned on Crescent, the medic declared the pitcher fit. With words of encouragement from her teammates, she managed to deliver a strikeout, preventing the runner on third from scoring a potential winning run.

It was Crescent’s turn to bat in the final half of the inning. The first batter swung for a grounder. However, a careless misthrow saw the Crescent runner reach first base safely, promptly steal to second and then surprise the RV players with another steal to third.

With a runner on third and no outs, it was pressure on RV as they had to try all means to prevent the run from scoring. Although they tried to do a pickoff, it did not succeed and the ball went rolling past the outfield.

Seeing the error, the runner immediately ran for home, stepping on the home plate for the winning run and secure the championship title for Crescent.
