Hougang Sports Hall, Wednesday, November 30, 2011 — Dunman Secondary won both the girls’ and boys’ National Under-16 Volleyball Championships this morning.

Dunman Secondary beat Punggol Secondary 3-0 in the boys’ final while their girls team beat Ngee Ann Secondary 3-0 to avenge an earlier group defeat.

Bukit Panjang Government High beat a spirited Xinmin Secondary to finish third in the girls’ category.

In the boys’ final, Dunman were clearly the more balanced side in terms of offense, while Punggol tended to rely on their Number 7 and 8 to get the majority of the points. Faced with Dunman’s taller blocking reach, many Punggol attacks were snuffed out.

However, credit must go to Punggol’s main attacking pair, who despite the height disadvantage, were often able to score points with intelligent spike placement and deliberate touch-outs off the blocks.

There was no stopping Dunman’s finesse, though, as they ran out eventual 3-0 winners to wrap up a very successful campaign where they have not dropped a single set to any team.

In the boys’ 3rd/4th placing game, Chong Boon Secondary beat Clementi Town Secondary 3-0. Both teams seemed to get off to slow starts which were plagued with unforced errors. Chong Boon, in particular, were struggling to find their rhythm.

However, the moment they settled down into their normal attacking game, the points came easily. There was excitement in the 3rd set, when Clementi Town failed to hold on to a 20-15 lead. Chong Boon did well to suddenly come alive and snatch back the set to eventually win the match 3-0.
