CCAB, Tuesday, February 7, 2012 — Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat St Joseph’s Institution 55-9 for their second win in a row in the National B Division Rugby Championship.

Playing without a couple of key players, ACS(I) started off cautiously, and found it difficult to keep the ball with SJI playing good strong rugby. ACS(I) conceded numerous penalties for poor discipline, and it was no surprise that once they got into range, SJI drew first blood when they nailed a penalty from 30m out in front of the posts.

The penalty sparked a fire in the play of the ACS(I) team as they responded handsomely with four tries in the first half. It was again the ACS(I) ill-discipline which saw them which give up more penalties, which SJI accepted with aplomb, converting two more to keep the scoreline competitive.

At half time, ACS(I) led SJI 20-9.

In the second half, ACS(I) shifted up a gear and tightened up their play. They attacked relentlessly and gave up fewer penalties. SJI tried to defend but it was to no avail, as the wave of blue and gold swept over the try line five more times, and each of them successfully converted.

SJI were looking to spring a surprise on the day, but it was not to be on this day.

In other Group A matches, St Andrew’s Secondary won their second in a row with a 79-0 win over Junyuan Secondary. The Saints had won their opening game 73-3 against Greenridge Secondary.

Raffles Institution also have a perfect 2-0 win-loss record since the start of the season. They beat Greenridge 72-0 to follow up from their opening 37-0 win over Pioneer Secondary.
