CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), Wednesday, February 15, 2012 — Raffles Girls’ School beat Singapore Chinese Girls’ School 30-15 while Cedar Girls’ Secondary beat Ang Mo Kio Secondary 37-16 in their opening Round 2 matches of the South Zone Netball Championship on Monday, February 13th.
In Group Y, CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) were comfortable 54-14 winners over Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary while St Margaret’s Secondary beat Fairfield Methodist Secondary 42-17.
On Wednesday, Cedar Girls’ then beat SCGS 20-22 in a Group X match to snuff out the latter’s semi-final hopes.
SCGS’ efforts seemed to pay off even though Cedar took a 4-0 lead in the initial minutes but SCGS managed to settle down and close the quarter trailing by just one point 5-6.
In the second quarter, SCGS applied more pressure with their defense in the center court and took a three-point lead at the end of half time.
However, Cedar kept their pressure on and drew many penalty shots in their attacking circle. SCGS also seemed to fumble more in this quarter which Cedar capitalized on to their advantage to take a five-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter, both sides played an excellent game with Cedar pulling ahead by seven points before SCGS started to close the deficit. However, time eventually ran out on SCGS and Cedar sealed a 22-20 win as well as a place in the semi-finals.
In a Group Y match, St Margaret’s played an excellent game of quick passes and sharp shooting to beat Kuo Chuan Prebysterian 28-15.
Kuo Chuan adopted a different strategy with their two tall shooters. However, lapses in Kuo Chuan’s passes down court and center passes gave St Margaret’s a comfortable lead by half time.
Next Monday, Cedar Girls’ will pit their wits and skills against RGS while CHIJ will face the speed and quickness of St Margaret’s to see who will emerge as the top of their respective Round 2 groups.
