Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Friday, February 17, 2012 — Jurong Secondary let slip their lead to allow Nanyang Girls’ High to narrowly win 2-0 (25-22, 26-24) in the West Zone B Division Girls’ Volleyball Final.

Both Nanyang and Jurong scored a similar number of points with Nanyang having 30 points from 25 kills, 1 block and 4 service aces. Jurong scored 29 points from 21 kills, 4 blocks and 4 service aces. However, Nanyang managed to exploit Jurong’s defenses, scoring many points off the Jurong block and forcing defensive errors through touch-outs.

Jurong had a shaky start as defensive errors allowed Nanyang to take the lead. Jurong centre Qiuluan (#13) did not seem her usual self at the start as she could not put together a scoring streak like in previous games. As Nanyang continued to run off with the lead, timeouts by Jurong at the 14-9 and 17-9 mark provided no respite.

However, Jurong began making their comeback. With Qiuluan (Jurong #13) back on the front line, she started scoring valuable points to bring Jurong closer to Nanyang.

A timeout by Nanyang at the 18-16 mark could not stop Jurong’s advances as they quickly took the next two points. Jurong then turned the tables on Nanyang after Huiyuh (Jurong #2) fired off an ace.

The set continued to be close one, with both teams tied 22-22. Unfortunately, two blocking errors by Aijia (Jurong #4) allowed Nanyang to lead once again at a crucial moment.

In the next rally, Jurong seemed to have managed to hold off Nanyang as setter Huiyuh (#2) went up to send a drop shot into an empty spot. However, it was deemed as an illegal attack after as she was from the back row.

Jurong were not deterred by the loss of the first set, as they quickly raced off to establish a six-point advantage over Nanyang right at the start of the second set.

Jurong kept hold of their lead over Nanyang despite the latter’s attempts at making a comeback. Nanyang managed to close in to trail by three points but with Qiuluan (Jurong #13) being rotated back into the front line, Jurong managed to pull ahead once again.

However, misfortune soon struck.

Jurong found themselves stuck on one of their weak rotations and saw Nanyang bring themselves right back into the game.

A defensive error by Jurong saw Nanyang level the score at 20-20. The teams continued to be tied for the next three points, and it was Aijia (Jurong #4) who took the team to set point after her drop shot caught the Nanyang team off guard.

At the next rally, Jurong seemed to have sealed the set after she delivered a powerful spike from the outside which deflected out of bounds off the Nanyang block. But their early celebrations were cut short as it was deemed that the ball had not crossed over.

With their momentum stopped, Jurong subsequently lost the next point, before a spiking error in the next rally gave Nanyang the win.
