Bedok Reservoir, Tuesday, March 21, 2012 — Heng Yu Jie of Catholic High hit the finish line of the 4.3km route in 13 minutes 39.23 seconds to win the B Division category at the 53rd National Schools Cross-Country Championships. He was followed closely by Marcus Ng of Victoria School who finished just over four seconds behind in 13:43.76.
Thineshwaran s/o Krishnakumar, who won the C Division category in 2011, was third. The Bendemeer Secondary School runner clocked 13:49.66.
The two runners have had close races against each other at the schools’ cross-country championships, ever since Yu Jie finished third and Marcus fifth as Secondary One students in 2009. In 2010, Marcus won the C Division title, beating Yu Jie by nearly 44 seconds. In 2011, with both competing in the B Division, it was Yu Jie who finished just over nine seconds ahead of Marcus in third.
The Catholic High School student carried on his dominance over Marcus when he won the Under-18 title at the Singapore Athletic Association Cross Country championships in January 2012, ahead of Marcus who finished in fifth place. Marcus turned the tables on Yu Jie at last month’s Wings Cross Country meet when the VS student beat Yu Jie to first place in the Under-17 category. Marcus clocked a time of 13:31.73 on the same 4.3km route at the Bedok Reservoir Park, with Yu Jie about 13 seconds behind.
Although Yu Jie won his latest battle against Marcus, their school teams finished in reverse order though as Victoria School won their 16th B Division title since 1990. Besides Marcus, Venuraam s/o Selvan (6th), Harold Ong (14th) and Mahesvaran s/o Selvan (15th) also finished in the top 20 to ensure Victoria’s third consecutive title with 37 points.
Lim Jia De (9th), Joshua Nga (13th) and David Yong (18th) also finished in the top 20 for Catholic High but their total of 41 points meant a silver medal for them.
Raffles Institution finished third, with three of their runners in the top 20. Shohib B Abdul Wahab Marican (7th), Mohamed Imran Jashirudeen (11th), Rahul Jayaprabha (16th) and Shawn Teo (33rd) combined for 67 points.
Bendemeer were 10 points behind to finish in fourth place in the team standings. Led by Thineshwaran’s third-place individual finish, Ivan Consuelo Hong (19th), Rahul Rai (23rd) and Lua Jian Hong (32nd) were the next three fastest Bendemeer runners.
The top four individual finishers, Yu Jie, Marcus, Thineshwaran and Leroi Lee, represented Singapore at last year’s Asian Schools Cross Country championships in Mongolia. They competed in the 14-15 years old category and finished ninth, third, 12th and 14th respectively in a field of 25 runners to help Singapore place second of five countries in this category.
