United World College, Sunday, May 20, 2012 — Pioneer CSC edged out Clementi Spirit 42-41 in the Community Games basketball tournament.
It was Pioneer’s first win in three group games while for Clementi, it was their third loss in a row.
The game was tied at 40-40 with 22 seconds left when Tommy Tan (Pioneer #15) earned two free throws which he sank to give his team a 42-40 lead.
With 10 seconds left, Tan Wee Yau (Clementi #11) also earned two free throws but he could only sink one to reduce the deficit to just one.
Another foul at the other end this time sent (Pioneer #17) to the line but he missed both, giving Clementi one more possession and a chance to tie the game. However, Clementi could not sink a final basket to pull of a win.
“Our defense was not too bad,” said Pioneer captain Ong Dong Ling. “We lost the third and fourth quarter because of possession. We managed to pull back because Jeremy Chua had three 3-pointers.”
“We’ve played five years for the CSC. We play twice a week at the Jurong West, Block 648, near Pioneer MRT. We’ve known each other for five to six years and last year we made it to the second round in the Inter-Con Games,” added Dong Ling.
“Wasted!” said Clementi’s captain, Tan Wee Yau, 31, who used to play for Tagawa and Home United. “We were within 10 points but we have a young team. Most are 17 and 18.”
