PESEB, Thursday, 28 June, 2012 – Serangoon Garden Secondary School beat Bishan Park Secondary school with a score of 53 – 33 in the C Division South Zone Boys’ Basketball Championship. This is Serangoon Garden’s second win in the first round of the championship.
Alvin Leow of Bishan Park had a game-high 27 points while Swee Zi Heng of Serangoon Garden had a team-high 14 points.
Both teams got off to a strong start in the first quarter, with Serangoon Garden leading 18-10 by the end of the first 10 minutes.
Bishan Park fell behind in the second quarter due to poor shooting and a watertight defense by Serangoon Gardens. This, coupled with Serangoon Garden’s Swee Zi Heng (#8) easily scoring from free throws, allowed Serangoon Gardens to pull ahead by 19 points (31-12) at half time.
In the third quarter, Bishan Park fought back, with one of their top scorers, Alvin Leow (#10), leading the way. He scored a string of two-pointers as he eluded the Serangoon Garden defense effortlessly.
This helped to close the gap slightly as Bishan Park outscored Serangoon Garden 16-13 in this quarter to trail by 16 (44-28) heading into the fourth.
However, Bishan Park could not close the gap further as they found themselves outscored 9-5 in the final quarter.
When asked about their victory, Bryan Chew (#9), captain of Serangoon Garden, said he was pleased with the teamwork and perseverance his team demonstrated.
“We also started to get an advantage when we listened to our coach’s strategy about marking #10 (Alvin) and stuck to it,” commented Bryan.
Their next opponent will be Holy Innocents’ High, on Friday, 29 June 2012. Bryan named Holy Innocents’ High as one of Serangoon Garden’s main competitors for the championship title.
Bishan Park will face Henderson Secondary School on the same day.
