Raffles Place Park, Friday, July 6, 2012 — The organisers of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore have capped the number of runners that can register for all categories.
The changes will hit the 21.1km and 10km categories in particular, based on past participation numbers (see table below).
For the 21.1km route, the quota is 10,000 while for the 10km, no more than 20,000 will be accepted.
In 2011, 19,700 runners registered for the 21.1km category while 16,000 signed up for the 10km.
The Singapore Marathon has been plagued by complaints of congestion because the different routes converge and all runners finish at the same point.
The quota for the full 42km marathon is 25,000. 20,000 signed up for that category in 2011.
The 5km, first introduced in the 2011 edition, has been scrapped. 5,000 signed up for that category in 2011.
The event was given a gold label certification by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) after it was organised in 2011. London, Berlin and New York City marathons are the other events with the same certification. Singapore is only the fifth Asian country and the first in South-East Asia to achieve this.
Organisers believe that the event can hold 60,000 runners comfortably.
“Running is the most popular sport in Singapore and the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore is the only Gold Label certified running event locally to date. We believe the sweet spot for a good quality marathon in Singapore’s context is in the range of 60,000 runners.
“This will allow us to pay more attention to the race experience, which is not only about running along a scenic route, but also about the ambience along the running route and other programmes we organise around the marathon in the lead up to and during race day,” said Mr Lim Teck Yin, the chief executive officer of the Singapore Sports Council, and the chairman of the marathon organising committee.
Other improvements to the Marathon include revised race routes, faster processing times at baggage deposit counters and more slots for pre-race runner’s activities. Pre-race runner’s activities include running clinics and sponsor programmes to help runners prepare for race day.
Registration fees this year also remain unchanged.
The first 1,000 registrants at Raffles Place Park received a limited edition goodie bag each.
Runners can also register online via the official website — www.marathonsingapore.com — from 11am on July 6th, and at Toa Payoh Sports & Recreation Centre (SRC) from 10am on July 7th, 2012 onwards.
