Bedok Reservoir Park, Wednesday, March 27, 2013 — Kathleen Lin of Crescent Girls’ School caused a major upset when she put in a last-minute charge, blazing past many favourites to clinch the B Division gold at the 54th National Schools Cross Country Championships. She completed the 3.6-kilometre route in a time of 14 minutes 32.87 seconds.
Two Cedar Girls’ Secondary runners took the second and third spots. Edina Tan clocked 14:35.88 while teammate Nah Yi Xin followed her in 14:51.40.
Kathleen was not considered a contender for the B Division crown as she had finished 19th and eighth at the SAA and Swift Cross Country Championships respectively.
The Cedar girls had taken the lead for most of the race, until the final stretch of the race when Kathleen put in a devastating kick that no one was able to react to quickly enough.
Whilst Kathleen enjoyed the limelight as the individual champion, Cedar Girls’ were able to defend their B Division team title, with the quartet of Edina, Yi Xin, Lee Yuet Zhen and Hilary Soo finishing 12 points ahead of main rivals River Valley High. Team score is calculated by adding up the positions of the top four runners in each team, and the team with the lowest number of points wins.
The Commonwealth team were also to pull a surprise on everyone when they finished among the top four. Commonwealth have not featured in the top four since 2004 when they won the title.
“My individual achievement was better than expected! But more importantly, I’m very proud of my team’s performance today, and I really hope the juniors can continue the legacy for the years to come!” said Cedar captain, Edina Tan, with a wide smile.
With the cross country season coming to an end, the Cedar girls will now turn their attention to the upcoming Track and Field Nationals starting on April 4, where the school aims to retain their B Division title.
