Presbyterian High School, Thursday, March 28, 2013 — Presbyterian High School defeated Ngee Ann Secondary 2–0 (25–20, 25-16) in their final Round 2 game in the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship. Both teams will advance into the semi-finals.

This result also meant that both Cedar Girls’ Secondary and Jurong Secondary were knocked out as they only had four points each. Cedar needed Ngee Ann to defeat Presbyterian High to have any chance of advancing to the semi-finals.

This win gave Presbyterian High a total of five points and left them tied with Ngee Ann on points. However, Ngee Ann topped Group X because they had a better point difference.

Presbyterian High needed to beat Ngee Ann to get into the semi-finals. Before their game with Ngee Ann, Presbyterian High had only two points from defeating Cedar Girls’ Secondary 2–1 (18–25, 26–24, 25–23). They had lost to Jurong Secondary 0–2 (20–25, 19–25) earlier.

For Ngee Ann, they were already through to the semi-finals even before their game against Presbyterian High. Previously, Ngee Ann had defeated Cedar Girls’ 2–0 (26–24, 25–19) to earn three points and gained another two from their 2–1 win (25–18, 17–15, 25–19) over Jurong.

The first set between Ngee Ann and Presbyterian High had an early tie at 1–1. Presbyterian High scored two more but Ngee Ann then went on a six-point streak to lead 7–3. Presbyterian High reacted with two straight points before Ngee Ann bagged another to have a three-point lead at 8–5.

Presbyterian High then scored five consecutive points to get a two-point, 10–8 lead. Ngee Ann scored a point in reply but with momentum clearly on their side, Presbyterian High exploded for another four unanswered points to lead 14–9.

Whenever Ngee Ann scored a point, Presbyterian High replied with more than one point and they soon built a 18–12 lead.

With Presbyterian High leading 21–13, Ngee Ann finally had a breakthrough, going on a five-point scoring streak, reducing the difference to 21–18. However, Ngee Ann could only score another two points in the set as Presbyterian High won it 25–20.

At 3–3 in the second set, Presbyterian High had a four-point streak to lead 7–3. Presbyterian High managed to keep their four-point lead till 10–6 before going on a five-point streak to hold a nine-point lead at 15–6.

Presbyterian High continued to pull ahead to lead by 11 at 18–7. Still, Ngee Ann made a commendable attempt to come back by scoring six consecutive points to reduce the deficit to five (18–13). The five-point gap remained until 15–20.

Presbyterian High would allow Ngee Ann just another point, and at 22–16, they went on an unanswered three-point run to win the second set 25–16.

Karmen Choo (#4), captain of Presbyterian High, said: “Though we started (the game) without team spirit, we did our best and it was a good game. Our team did well in supporting and encouraging one another. We need to work on our teamwork and communication. They (Ngee Ann Secondary) were good in terms of spirit and skill.”

The captain of Ngee Ann Secondary declined to have an interview.

Ngee Ann will play against Nanyang Girls’ High at 12 p.m. on April 2 in one semi-final while Presbyterian High will face off with Dunman Secondary at 1:30 p.m. on the same day. Both games will be played at Presbyterian High School.
