Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, April 8, 2014 — Nur Izlyn of Singapore Sports School (SSP) set a new meet and national under-17 record of 14.65 seconds to bag the girls’ B Division 100m hurdles gold medal at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.
Jerrine Lim of CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ was second with a timing of 16.30s, while Vanessa Low of Nanyang Girls’ High finished third in 16.35s.
The B Division record of 14.83s was set in 2012 by CHIJ Katong Convent alumna Jannah Wong, while the national under-17 mark was held by Goh Wei Ning, who ran 14.78s in 2010.
Both records were rewritten by Nur Izlyn in the morning heats when she clocked 14.77s. She subsequently bested that timing by 0.12s in the afternoon final.
Jannah still holds the national youth record of 14.47s. Nur Izlyn’s ex-SSP schoolmate Kerstin Ong closed in on the mark with her 14.59s run last month.
Nur Izlyn’s result today was an improvement from last year’s edition, where she took home the silver medal with a timing of 15.12s. “I feel very happy. I did not expect myself to break the record,” commented the final-year student at Singapore Sports School.
Nur Izlyn had previously qualified for the Asian Area Qualification for the upcoming 2014 Youth Olympic Games, when she ran 14.95s at the Singapore Athletic Association Series 2 meet. According to Izlyn, her experience in the heats of the 2013 Nanjing Asian Youth Games spurred her to victory. “I competed against a Japanese girl (Nana Fujimori), who made me want to go faster and beat her. She was my motivation for my win in this race.”
Nana Fujimori is the 2013 Nanjing Asian Youth Games girls’ 100m hurdles champion with a timing of 13.69s.
