National C Division Basketball Final North Vista Secondary vs Catholic High

OCBC Arena, Thursday, August 28, 2014 — A clutch shot by Cletus Ng (#6) and a free throw from Cheng Ye Hui (#7) propelled North Vista Secondary to a 52–49 victory over Catholic High in the final of the National C Division Basketball Championship. This is North Vista’s second title; they last won the title in 2010.

Cheng Ye Hui (#7) led North Vista with a game-high 21 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the game. Teammates Cletus Ng (#6) and Lim Joe Yang (#11) contributed 13 and 12 points respectively. Chaw Weiyang (#4) led Catholic High with a team-high 15 points.

Lim Joe Yang (#11) sparked the North Vista offence in the opening quarter with three consecutive shots from beyond the arc within the first two minutes. Joe Yang and Cletus Ng (#6) combined to score all 17 of North Vista’s first quarter points.

In the second quarter, Catholic High forced multiple North Vista turnovers but were unable to convert on the offensive end. In the absence of Keith Png (#15), who had to sit out most of the game due to early foul trouble, Chaw Weiyang (#4) stepped up to contribute on both ends. Weiyang had six points in the quarter. A pair of free throws by Tiong Chuan Yao (#10) put North Vista up nine at the end of the half.

After the break, Catholic High took advantage of North Vista’s turnovers to outscore the latter 14–9 to reduce the deficit to four points.

North Vista used a 6–0 run to extend the lead to 10 points in the opening minutes of the closing quarter. A subsequent three-point play from Chaw Weiyang (#4) sparked a 7–0 Catholic High run to reduce North Vista’s lead to three points.

With five minutes left, Travis Thong (#6) tied the game at 44 apiece after a steal from North Vista’s Cletus Ng (#6). Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes. With about 40 seconds remaining, a clutch layup by Cletus Ng (#6) gave North Vista the 51–49 lead. On the ensuing possession, Cheng Ye Hui (#7) was fouled by Catholic High’s Chua Kaixuan (#13) and he sank a free throw to seal North Vista’s victory.

North Vista captain, Cheng Ye Hui (#7), said, “It feels great, especially with a lot of supporters here. Our families and friends were able to come here and support us. I think we didn’t play up to standard today and we allowed them to catch up to us at one point. But we didn’t give up and we managed to fight back.”
