Groupings for Round 2 of National B and C Division girls volleyball

With Round One of the National B and C Division Girls Championships having ended recently, the groupings for the Top 8 are out.
Notably, the biggest casualties in the B Division were the 2009 B Division runners-up Ngee Ann Secondary, and third runner-up Bukit Panjang Government High, who both failed to make it to the quarter-finals.
Cedar Girls’ Secondary, Dunman Secondary, Presbyterian High, St. Hilda’s Secondary, Shuqun Secondary, Nanyang Girls’ High, Jurong Secondary and Xinmin Secondary are the eight who have secured a spot in the next round in the B Division.

Presbyterian High School, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 – Presbyterian High defeated Jurong Secondary 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) to top Group B at the National B Division Girls Volleyball Championship.

In January 2010, 30 teams started the North Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship and by February 8th, 12 teams had qualified for the second round.
There were familiar names like North Vista Secondary, Presbyterian High, Woodlands Ring, Ahmad Ibrahim and Seng Kang Secondary. There were also dark horses like Yishun and Hougang Secondary. Three rising schools, Pei Hwa, Northland and Anderson Secondary made up the dozen.

Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 – Asian Youth Games representative Larry Liew led his North Vista Secondary B Division team to their second straight triple-digit win with a 104-22 trouncing of Fuchun Secondary.
Elsewhere, Presbyterian High School also notched their second win in a row with a 61-31 victory over Deyi Secondary.
The exciting game of the day was the Ahmad Ibrahim boys team hanging on for a 69-65 win over Nan Chiau High.

Defending champions Presbyterian High open season with big win in North Zone basketball

Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, January 18, 2010 – Defending B Division basketball champions Presbyterian High School stated their intent in the 2010 season with a comprehensive 69-29 win over Compassvale Secondary School.
All twelve players on the Presbyterian High roster rotated in a full court zonal press which hardly gave their North Zone first round opponents any breathing space.

RI beat Presbyterian High in C Division Basketball

Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, July 29, 2009 – RI beat Presbyterian High 47-43 in the quarter-finals of the National C Division Basketball Championship.
Screeching of basketball shoes were breaking eardrums of the already small crowd.
Stepping on court, both Presbyterian High and Raffles Institution looked promising. By the first 20 seconds, both teams had scored. With Presby’s #10 scoring a 3-pointer, and with Raffles’#7 attempting to catch up with a near shot.
After 4 minutes of steals, PHS’ #3 broke the silence with a 2-pointer.
Following that, four free throws were given to Raffles’ #7 and #15, both of whom scored 1 point each.

If it wasn’t for her volleyball teammate Dorita Peng, Tan Yi Ting might still be in the Chinese orchestra Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) and would not be part of the first Asian Youth Games.
Dorita and Yi Ting will represent Singapore in the girls’ category of the AYG Volleyball come July 1st.
Yi Ting got into volleyball “partly because of Dorita.”

Eight youths will get an opportunity to bring glory to their country when they represent Singapore in the FIBA 33 basketball competition at the upcoming Asian Youth Games (AYG).
Jabez Su, Goh Kong Tat, Larry Liew and Russel Low are all familiar faces for those in sync with the local basketball scene and they have been chosen as Singapore’s best for the boys.
Over at the girls side, Sharlene Huang, Hannah Ng, Tok Hui Min and Nicole Lau are the host nation’s representatives.

16 schools to offer Direct School Admission for athletes

If taking exams has never been your strong suit, the Direct School Admission exercise might just be your salvation.
This Ministry of Education initiative gives schools more flexibility to admit students based on non-academic criteria.
Of the 74 schools participating in this year’s exercise for admission to the 2010 Secondary One cohort, 16 of them have been given the green light to offer discretionary places for 12 sports. It’s recognition that these schools have a track record of achievements and development plans for their niche areas.

Jurong East Sports Hall, Thursday, April 30, 2009 – The B Division Basketball Championship witnessed the emergence of new champions in the girls’ and the boys’ categories. Previous winners Raffles Girls’ School could only manage a third position this year while Catholic High were eliminated from contention after the second round of the national championship.
This year, Dunman Secondary and Presbyterian High were crowned the girls’ and boys’ champions respectively after epic showdowns with Chung Cheng High (Main) and New Town Secondary respectively.

Jurong East Sports Hall, Thursday, April 30, 2009 – Presbyterian High conquered New Town Secondary 54-45 to be crowned the new champions of the boys’ B Division Basketball Championship.
Both teams had met earlier in the quarter-final round of the national championship and it was New Town which emerged victorious then to inflict the only defeat for Presbyterian High in the championship. That unexpected defeat for Presbyterian High left four-time defending champion Catholic High out in the cold on a countback.

Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, April 17, 2009 – New Town Secondary never trailed against title contenders Presbyterian High as they qualified for the semi-finals of the B Division Basketball Championship with a 59-52 victory.
With the victory, New Town also knocked out defending champions Catholic High after the latter lost to Presbyterian High by 22 points in the previous match. The three teams finished with identical 2-wins-1-losses records but the head-to-head matchups between the three teams left four-time defending champions Catholic High out in the cold.
