The 2010 S.League season kicked-off with Young Lions coming back from two goals down to draw with Woodlands Wellington 2-2.

The developmental Under-23 side has boosted their squad in the close season with players like Serbian midfielder Luka Savic, but they still needed a last-minute goal from substitute Afiq Yunos to salvage the draw. After coming back with the South-East Asian bronze medal, the Young Lions will be hoping to continue their good fortune in the S.League.

National striker Aleksandar Duric, 39, may not be playing in the Indonesia Super League (ISL) next year after all.

It is understood that the deal fell apart after Sriwijaya FC did not deliver on the terms. Duric just returned from Vietnam today after playing for Singapore in an international friendly tournament.

Brunei DPMM FC cannot continue 2009 S.League season

Monday, October 19, 2009 – The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has received confirmation from Brunei DPMM FC that they are unable to resolve the Brunei Football Association (BAFA) issue in time to complete their S.League season.

On Friday 17 October, FIFA had denied the final appeal by FAS to allow DPMM to continue playing in the current S.League season while the suspension on BAFA still stood.

A long-time observer of Singapore football, Dez Corkhill, shares his take on the state of Singapore football. He believes that the lack of support from the mainstream media has retarded the development of football in Singapore.

“The biggest issue I see – and I work in the media – is that the S.League has no visibility. The local papers will report, not on a match from the previous night, if it’s a humdinger, they will preview [an upcoming game], for whatever commercial reasons. It’s wrong. It needs to be changed.

Jalan Besar Stadium, Friday, October 16, 2009 – The third time proved to be the charm for Singapore Armed Forces Football Club as they claimed their record-breaking fourth consecutive S.League title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sengkang Punggol.

They had previously failed to seal the title against Gombak United and the Super Reds.

S.League top scorer Aleksandar Duric headed home the only goal of the game from Shaiful Esah’s corner in the 15th minute to claim victory and the title for the Warriors.

Saturday, October 17, 2009 – FIFA has confirmed that Brunei DPMM FC will be unable to continue playing in the 2009 S.League season while the suspension on the Brunei Football Association (BAFA) still stands. Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, October 13, 2009 – The Super Reds denied Singapore Armed Forces Football Club (SAFFC) the opportunity to wrap up their record-breaking fourth consecutive S.League title in front of their home fans as they thrashed the defending champions 4-1.

Braces from Chang Jo Yoon and Choi Dong Soo sealed victory for the much-improved Korean side as they stole the show from the Warriors.

SAFFC had a chance to claim the title last week, but nerves got the better of them and as a result, they were outplayed by Gombak United 2-0. It was much of the same this week, with the Super Reds giving SAFFC a lesson in passing and ball movement.

FAS postpones upcoming DPMM FC match

Singapore, Friday, October 2, 2009 – FIFA has officially written to FAS to confirm that they have indeed suspended the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (BAFA) with immediate effect which means that DPMM FC, an affiliate of BAFA, are no longer permitted to play in the S.League or in any organised football competition or matches.

Jalan Besar Stadium, Tuesday, 22 September, 2009 – Afiq Yunos scored a last?gasp winner with the final touch of the match as the Young Lions continued their fine form in the S.League with a 2-1 victory over Home United.

After a run of stunning performances, the Young Lions were brimming with confidence and they took the lead through 18-year old Khairul Nizam in the 11th minute, ending his eight-game goal drought.

However, his early goal was cancelled out by an Itimi Dickson strike in the second half. Both teams pushed for the winner, but it was the heroics from defender Afiq Yunos that gave the Young Lions’ all three points.

Jalan Besar Stadium, Tuesday, September 15, 2009 – The Young Lions’ three-match unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end as Brunei DPMM edged them out 1-0 in the S.League thanks to an early goal by Drazen Govic.

There were a host of chances for the Young Lions including a penalty miss by Hariss Harun in the 73rd minute, but the youngsters weren’t able to convert any of them into goals, resulting in their 15th defeat of the season.

Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 – Singapore Armed Forces Football Club (SAFFC) took a huge step towards their fourth consecutive S.League title as they fought from a goal down to hammer Geylang United 4-1.

The win extends SAFFC’s lead at the summit of the S.League table to a massive 14 points with only six games remaining. The victory was also sweet revenge for the Warriors after the Singapore Cup semi-finalist knocked them out in the opening round of the Singapore Cup.

Geylang took a shock lead against the run of play with captain Noor Ali leading by example with a header at the far post. However, a brace from Therdsak Chaiman gave SAFFC the lead within 12 minutes while Aleksandar Duric’s clinical strike and Rastislav Belicak’s own goal sealed a brilliant first half blitz for the Warriors. Alam Shah takes off for Indonesia football – who can blame him?

National football striker and captain Noh Alam Shah has signed a one-year deal to play for Arema Malang in the Indonesian Super League. Precious Emuejeraye, Baihakki Khaizan and Fahrudin Mustafic are also reportedly interested in moving to Indonesian clubs.

A rule change in the Indonesian Super League now allows their clubs to hire five imports, two of whom must come from Asian Football Confederation countries.

Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Thursday, August 27, 2009 – Singapore Armed Forces Football Club (SAFFC) bounced back from the Home United defeat as they scraped past Woodlands Wellington thanks to a solitary goal from former Woodlands player Park Tae Won in the 75th minute.

With three points in the bag, SAFFC regained their 11 point cushion at the top of the S.League table as they look set to claim the title for a record fourth season in a roll.
