Nanyang Primary dominate at inter-school track and field championships

Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, July 22, 2009 – Nanyang Primary School won four out of eight divisional titles at the 50th Inter-Primary Track and Field Championship.
Nanyang Primary won the B-Boys divisional titles and swept the B, C and D-Girls divisional titles by big margins.
18 records fell during the course of the championships which saw triple jump removed for the first time this year because organisers said that research has shown the discipline was suitable only for older youth.

Over the last two weeks, I spent some time at the 49th Inter-Primary Track and Field Championships. 97 schools fielded 2,536 athletes over the eight days, a number that is trending downwards according to coaches and teachers I spoke with. Some schools have also dropped the traditional Sports Day, replacing it with a telematch-type sports carnival.
That is a pity.
Running around in a open field is one of those simple joys of growing up. If you’re blessed with a healthy, normal body, you take to running like you to take to breathing – you don’t have to think about it. Sitting there in class, the highlight for most of us is recess – so that we can run around.

9-year-old Kang Yee Cher of Fuhua Primary blazed past everyone to win the D-Boys 100m Final in a championship-record time of 12.41s, a time that is faster than the equivalent British and American age-group record. Yee Cher also bagged the 200m gold in a championship-record time of 25.70s.

Goutham Selvarajoo beat off a late challenge from Rahul Jayaprabha to win the 800m gold in a time of 2:42.78mins. Goutham of Ang Mo Kio Primary, was leading comfortably but Rahul of Temasek Primary stepped up the pace and almost caught him. Raful finished just behind in 2:42.95min while Putera Amyrul Haziq of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian came in third with a time of 2:45.15min.
