Eight youths will get an opportunity to bring glory to their country when they represent Singapore in the FIBA 33 basketball competition at the upcoming Asian Youth Games (AYG).

Jabez Su, Goh Kong Tat, Larry Liew and Russel Low are all familiar faces for those in sync with the local basketball scene and they have been chosen as Singapore’s best for the boys.

Over at the girls side, Sharlene Huang, Hannah Ng, Tok Hui Min and Nicole Lau are the host nation’s representatives.

Jurong West Sports Hall, Friday, March 25, 2009 – With key players out injured, Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) had to dig deep to beat an inspired Woodgrove Secondary side 51-46 in a girls B Division Basketball Championship Group C match.

RGS dominated much of the first half, but were lucky to survive a shaky final quarter when they trailed for long periods of time.

“My team fought hard to win this game. We knew it would be a hard game and I took a calculated risk by resting Hannah (back injury), Anna and Stephanie (finger injuries), who can all really contribute to the team at both defensive and offensive ends,” said RGS coach Guangyi.

Yishun Town narrowly beat Woodgrove to win B Division Girls North Zone basketball final

Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, March 5, 2009 – Yishun Town Secondary narrowly won the B Division Girls North Zone Basketball Championship final with a hard fought 60-57 victory over Woodgrove Secondary.

Yishun Town notched up a 7-1 lead within five minutes of the first quarter. Woodgrove responded to close the point difference but still trailed 8–13 by the end of the first quarter.

Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, March 2, 2009 – Woodgrove Secondary were brought to life after the half-time break to overcome Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary 69-50 in their girls’ B Division Basketball Championship semi-final.

The Woodgrove patience and determined play came good as Huimin (Woodgrove #7) contributed 26 points with 14 of them in the final quarter as they surged forward in the later part of the match. Three other starters got double figures as Shamirah (Woodgrove #15), Huixian (Woodgrove #9) and Erra (Woodgrove #12) added 14, 12 and 10 points respectively in the victory.

Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, February 20, 2009 – Woodgrove Secondary overcame Punggol Secondary 73-34 in the second round of boys’ B Division North Zone Basketball Championship.

Both sides came into the match after losing their first Round 2 games and needed a win to have any chance of proceeding further in the competition.

Punggol managed to capture the first ball of the match and Sheng Yang (PGL #12) made the first 3-pointer to take a lead. The tide was overturned and Woodgrove took over the lead with a 9-0 run. Great defensive work by Woodgrove forced Punggol to shoot from range.

Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, February 16, 2009 – The first round of the B Division North Zone Basketball Championship came to an end yesterday and the Round 2 groups have thrown up intriguing matches to look out for.

In group G, all eyes are focused on Maris Stella High who ousted Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary in Round 1. Can they improve their defense to overcome Round 1 group winners Woodlands Ring Secondary and North Vista Secondary?

In group H, the main showdown will be the match between Chung Cheng High (Yishun) and Presbyterian High. It will be a confrontation of the best centres in the North Zone with Wu Qing De of Chung Cheng going up against Russel Low of Presbyterian High.
