Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, March 2, 2009 – The strength in depth of Yishun Town Secondary proved too strong for Anderson Secondary as they churned out an easy 82-48 victory in their B Division Girls North Zone basketball semi-final.
Shermaine See (Yishun Town, #4) was inspirational as she contributed 16 points and distributed play efficiently throughout the match. Sandra Goh (Yishun Town, #10) and Jie Ying (Yishun Town, #5) added 15 and 14 points respectively to complete the rout. Even Kun Yan‘s (Anderson, #10) 20-point game was not sufficient to avoid defeat.

Story by REDintern Alan Chiang
Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, February 16, 2009 – The first round of the B Division North Zone Basketball Championship came to an end yesterday and the Round 2 groups have thrown up intriguing matches to look out for.
In group G, all eyes are focused on Maris Stella High who ousted Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary in Round 1. Can they improve their defense to overcome Round 1 group winners Woodlands Ring Secondary and North Vista Secondary?
In group H, the main showdown will be the match between Chung Cheng High (Yishun) and Presbyterian High. It will be a confrontation of the best centres in the North Zone with Wu Qing De of Chung Cheng going up against Russel Low of Presbyterian High.

A preview of the 2009 Inter-School B Division Volleyball Championship (Boys)
December 30, 2008
By Lai Jun Wei
Volleyball teams have been gearing up for next year’s Inter-School B Division Volleyball Championships with the recently concluded U-16 Volleyball Championship giving a sneak preview of who some of the strongest teams are.
We did a poll to see which schools are likely to be the Big Four schools for the B Division Volleyball Championship and the results were not surprising. The analysis below is solely based on my observations and guesses. If you have your version, please do feel free to send in your predictions for next season.
Boys
In the boys’ category, St Hilda’s Secondary did not disappoint everyone as they emerged as U-16 champions again. With their towering centre #7 guarding the net, St. Hilda’s tend to be a formidable force in stuffing out attacks, especially if he’s teamed up with another player.
With their nimble setter (#1) able to adapt quickly in various situations, the attack is given a boost as he is still able to find his mark much of the time.
But gone are the days when St. Hilda’s dominated the court and swept aside their opponents without breaking much of a sweat.
In previous years, St Hilda’s won championships without dropping a single set. This year, the team experienced several close shaves, almost falling to Xinmin in both their encounters.
But what is commendable is that they always manage to stage a comeback despite being at a disadvantage.
From the stands, there is no sign of discontent among the players and encouragement is given rather than blame when they lose a point. Perhaps this might be the motivating factor which drives them to success.
My personal take is that they most probably will be at the championship final again next year.

Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Sunday, November 30, 2008 – Xinmin Secondary beat Yishun Town Secondary 3-0 (28-26, 25-19, 25-21) in their 3rd/4th placing match of the 2008 National U-13 Boys Junior Volleyball Championship.
Xinmin started off on a bad note, fumbling on their receive as the holes in their defense allowed Yishun Town to draw a lead. Perhaps they had not settled in, as their attacks could not make much of an impact as well. Yishun Town took six consecutive points, before the Xinmin coach called for a time out.
The break did not seem to help much as Xinmin blocked out a Yishun Town spike upon resuming the game. But they finally managed to put a stop to Yishun Town’s scoring streak as they successfully stuffed out a spike from an attack.
Yishun Town largely held on to a lead with Xinmin having to play catch up. Xinmin came quite close to Yishun Town several times, with their #1, Jasper spearheading many of their attacks. A good serve from him brought Xinmin to just within one point of Yishun Town.

Hougang Sports Hall, Thursday, November 6, 2008 – Dunman Secondary fended off Yishun Town Secondary to win 2-1 (25-20, 23-25, 15-11) in a Round 2, Group X match at the 2008 National U-16 Boys Junior Volleyball Championship. Despite Yishun Town taking the second set, Dunman held off the challenge to win the rubber set, and the match.
With both teams being coached by the same person, they had to play each other under the guidance of their teacher in charge.
Yishun Town had the opening serve, but the ball was easily picked up and sent to Dunman #6, who took home the first point with a spike from the outside which Yishun Town could not retrieve. Dunman #9 then took the second point when his served found the Yishun Town libero who tried to set the ball up, but was deflected out of bounds instead.

Basketball powerhouse Unity lose both matches on Day 5 of the National Championships
March 27, 2008
Story contributed by reader Ian Chew
Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, March 27, 2008 – Singapore Chinese Girls’ School scored a massive 48-30 win over their Unity Secondary counterparts to completely throw open Group D in the first round of the National Girls’ Basketball Championship.
It was also surprising, considering Unity had come into the match as West Zone champions, while SCGS were fighting for their lives after losing their first national round match to Bedok North Secondary.
But there was nothing surprising in the manner of SCGS’ win as they established an early 16-9 first quarter lead and extended their lead throughout the game. They were also certainly helped by a poor shooting display from the Unity forwards and took full advantage with numerous fast break conversions off Unity’s misses.
