Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) beat Anderson Junior College 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 to retain the ‘A’ Division Championship title. A play-by-play account of the final can be read below.

I’m Cheng, and I’m here at Toa Payoh Sports Hall this afternoon for the National ‘A’ Division Volleyball Championship Finals and we’re kicking off with the Girls Final first.
Hwa Chong Institution, defending champions. Anderson Junior College, coming back strong this year after missing the top four positions last year. Is there an upset brewing?
Leslie is here with me today, and he’ll be bringing you the action shots of the day.

– HCI win third set 25-16, and the match 3-0
– HCI’s Zoe makes a spike that AJC return… but the ball goes out of bounds!
– HCI make an attack that AJC fail to return and move into match-point 16-24.
– AJC’s Lee Ying (no.3) sends a spike that stumps HCI. HCI lead 16-23.
– HCI’s Sarah Sim (no.12) makes a spike and pulls her team closer to match-point 15-23.
– AJC make a good spike and serve 15-22.
– Can AJC stall HCI?
– HCI’s Chai Kai Lin (no3) spikes the ball into the net and AJC serve 14-22.
– HCI win another attack, and regain serve 13-22.
– AJC’s Chan Xue Shuang (no.17) sends a spike that HCI fail to return. AJC serve 13-21.
– HCI tumble again in defense, and AJC regain serve 12-20.

– HCI gain another point from AJC’s violation. HCI lead 11-20.
– It is HCI’s Zoe at work again, and HCI move up 11-19.
– AJC send a spike out of bounds and HCI continue to serve 11-18.
– HCI’s Cho Wen Jing (no.9) sends a very light drop into forecourt and AJC fail to anticipate! HCI lead 11-17.
– HCI’s Zoe spikes to backcourt again, and HCI serve 10-15.
– AJC’s Evelyn Neo (no.6) sends a good spike that HCI fail to return. AJC serve 10-14.
– AJC regain serve at 9-14.
– HCI’s Zoe Seet strikes back! HCI lead 8-13.
– AJC gain three points from HCI’s defensive fumbles. AJC serve 8-11.
– AJC’s Wong Li Si (no.7) sends a spike into the net. HCI lead 5-11.
– HCI’s Jayalakshmy (no.1) serves the ball into the net. AJC serve 5-9.
– An AJC spike sends the HCI girls tumbling. AJC hold serve 4-8.
– AJC start to fumble with defense, and HCI lead 2-8.
– AJC make a successful attack and regain serve 2-6.
– HCI’s Jayalakshmy (no.1) sends a spike that AJC fail to react to. HCI lead 1-6.
– HCI’s Sarah Sim (no.12) fails to return AJC’s spike and AJC gain serve 1-4.
– HCI hold serve from the start and move into a quick 0-4 lead.

Set 2
– HCI win second set 25-17.
– AJC’s Michelle Heng sends a spike out of bounds.
– HCI’s Chai Kai Lin (no.3) serves and AJC fail to return. HCI move into set-point 24-16.
– It’s Zoe again, and HCI inch toward another set-point at 23-16.
– After a rally of spikes and good defense, it is HCI’s Zoe again who does the finishing touch. HCI move on ahead 20-15.
– HCI’s Zoe sends a light drop into the centre of the court that catches AJC unguarded. HCI lead 19-15.
– HCI’s Zoe Seet (no.2) strikes again – twice – and pulls the lead away 18-15.
– AJC have put up another amazing performance and levelled the game at 15-15!
– HCI’s Sarah Sim has sent another spike and the lead widens to 15-12.
– HCI’s Sarah Sim (no.12) sends a spike that reflects out of bounds off AJC’s Selina Toh’s arms. HCI regain lead at 13-12.
– AJC have levelled the game 12-12 with yet another spike!
– AJC’s Lee Ying (no.3) sends an unexpected angled spike that HCI fail to receive! AJC are just one point behind at 12-11.
– AJC have found the sudden energy to send three consecutive attacks against HCI, and move closer at 12-10.
– In the meantime, HCI have continued their rampant attacks and forged ahead to a 12-7 lead.
– Pardon the lag, as the reporter has to double up as presenter for RedSportsTV.
– HCI have moved into a quick 7-2 lead as AJC seem to have lacked the initial confidence and zest to counteract HCI’s growing aggression.
– HCI’s Zoe sends a spike to AJC’s Michelle Heng (no.2) but she fails to defend.
– HCI’s Zoe strikes again, and the ball is ruled inbounds. HCI lead 4-2.
– HCI’s Zoe spikes the ball into the net, and AJC regain serve at 3-1.
– HCI move into a quick 3-0 lead.
– HCI’s Michelle Heng (no.2) sends a fierce spike that AJC try to defend but the ball deflects out of bound.

Set 1
– HCI win quick first set 25-15.
– HCI’s Chen Zhuo (no.7) sends a spike into the middle of the court but AJC’s libero Selina Toh (no.14) fails to anticipate!
– HCI’s Sarahl Sim (no.12) sends a spike to the backcourt and the umpire rules inbound. HCI move ahead 15-24 at set-point.
– AJC serve into the net and HCI win the serve! HCI lead 15-20.
– AJC’s Evelyn Neo (no.6) sends a spike and earns a point to regain serve 15-19.
– HCI’s Zoe Seet (no.2) spikes into right corner and catches AJC unguarded. HCI lead 13-18.
– AJC’s Michelle Heng (no.2) sends a spike that HCI fail to receive, and puts AJC one point behind at 10-11.
– HCI capitalize on a few serves and regain a quick 8-9 lead.
– AJC have gone on an early 8-5 lead.
– AJC have defended HCI’s attacks well, while HCI are looking to fumble a little with their own defense.
