Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Wednesday, May 23, 2007 – Raffles Junior College (RJC) returned to the National A Division Netball Final this afternoon for the first time in six years and bore testimony that pure faith and determination are what you need to overcome all odds. The RJC team won a surprise 53-42 victory over defending champions and long-time dominator Hwa Chong Institution (HCI).
Raffles made their last appearance in the final in 2001, their last of three consecutive appearances from 1999, and were edged out by Hwa Chong then. The route to the finals for the Rafflesians this season was already a remarkable, morale-boosting journey in itself. Today’s victory, the first in 23 years, only made it so much sweeter.
The match was a cliffhanger throughout the entire 60 minutes of game play. Raffles had taken the lead right from the start, and had seemed adamant not to let go of it. All in the sports hall must have been waiting for the moment where Hwa Chong would finally bounce back and regain a sustained leading position, but save for a brief minute in the second quarter where they took over the lead by a mere point, that moment never came. Every time Hwa Chong threatened to close in on them, the Rafflesians only seemed more determined to pull further ahead.
On the court today, pure determination and real sweat permeated every corner while the match turned into a battle of mental strength. It was truly a survival of the fittest.
In the earlier 3rd/4th placing match, Anglo-Chinese Junior College pulled out all the stops in their final game of the season as they trounced St Andrew’s Junior College 54-32 to win the bronze medals.

to =S:
well, if you would try to look at my report carefully, yes i did mention about defenders and midfielders with good moves.
and if you were to look really hard enough, you would notice my real-time reporting had an average of 15- to 30-second interval. at the rate the girls were popping in the goals, you could imagine the rate at which the ball had been traveling up and down the court in any play.
and if you could add in a little bit of imagination, try keeping one eye on the court, capturing all the sequence of plays in your head, and then try to type them all out real-time.
i am a team sports player myself, and i am not usually the top scorer, and i don’t get all the attention from the crowds. but i know my coach appreciates me in other ways – which has to be reason why i still get to play my minutes.
and netball is all about goals, and given all the chances at goal, it’s all about who takes their shot better.
on the flip side too, while shooters get all the attention when the team wins, they might also get all the blame for “poor shooting” when the team loses. so it’s a fair world. 🙂
Ok ok, i get you, thanks for the correction but don’t always ‘aiyoh!’ me.
It’s not like I am born to know all their faces. :/
erm.. the whole report sound as if the whole game evolves around the shooters. dont midfielders and defenders play a part too? it is a team game.
aiyoh again! 3rd quarter GA is not sarah. and the 3rd quarter GK is cassandra lahh.
HCI…simply overwhelmed. Basically their main reason for their success is their super tall GS. some sources say that even on a bad day they can be dangerous…but they just came out firing on all cylinders and HCI basically has no solution even if they put in 111%
aiyoh!!! 4th quarter report.. please amend. GA HCI is called Yi Wei NOT Sarah. thanks..
i think RJC really owned it today. no matter who’s better on paper, RJC really showed that they wanted it BADLY. n its realli inspiring to see that they’d managed to come back after six years to shock this season! so, well done RJ. good game to HCI, SAJC and ACJC!
:))
