National Stadium, Thursday, May 24, 2007 – It was almost as pulsating and thrilling as watching the last Malaysia Cup, especially as the National A Division Boys Football Final wound down the final ten minutes of the match.
With Raffles Junior College leading by a mere goal when Wang Bowen (#7) sent a high shot into the left corner of the goal post that goalie Pang Wei Wen (MJC #13) just could not reach in the 49th minute of the match, Meridian Junior College realized it was all or nothing and they forged ahead with relentless attacks.
After all, after losing the championship title to rival Victoria Junior College last year, a loss to an underdog this year would be rather hard to stomach, especially when they had a near-perfect run on the road to the finals again this season.
The 20,000-strong (Ed: Ha! Divide that by 20, please.) crowd in the main gallery – a sea of Raffles whites and greens on the left and Meridian light-blues on the right – went crazy with cheers when their schoolmates almost scored and groaned when a strike at goal flew over the goal posts or straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.
Both teams have had a good season this year and their Cup Final appearance was proof of it. Luck aside (yes, in any game, you do need luck because none of us is born a machine and you luck out when your opponent just happens to be in an inexplicable poor form on game-day), both teams displayed hard work and strong team effort to justify that playing berth in the Final. To say that both teams put in an extraordinary amount of hard running and played their guts and hearts out this afternoon would have been a gross understatement.
In the end, it was the Raffles side who held on tight to their one-goal lead and emerged the victorious ones to hug the trophy this afternoon.
Good job, everyone. I think you guys did exceptionally well to give us one of the most entertaining matches this season.

LIVE UPDATE FROM NATIONAL STADIUM
Hello, everybody!
Good Thursday afternoon, and welcome to the National Stadium!
Once again, this is Cheng, and I’m right here at Kallang to bring you the live action, play-by-play hopefully, of the National ‘A’ Division Football Final, that’s coming up in the next 45 minutes or so.
Raffles Junior College, underdogs and surprise finalist of the season, have done well in their road to the final, having lost none of their games. Meridian Junior College, 2005 champions and 2006 runners-up, are back in the final yet again this year, though without traditional rival Victorians. Having also gone undefeated but winning more games than Raffles, will it be a clean sweep for Meridian today? Or will the Raffles soccer boys pop a surprise like their netball schoolmates did yesterday?
Stay tuned.

The kung fu “fighter” from MJC is Mahdi #21… nt jiamin#19
Okay! Roger that.
Sorry, auntie here cannot tell crew-cuts apart, just like how you boys cannot tell lipstick shades apart. Ha.
Thanks again!
bowen scored, but the picture you posted was one of eugene instead. and uh the one you interviewed was bowen, no mistake about that
Thanks for the names!
Wait a minute, so the person who scored was Eugene, not Bowen, you mean?
So did I interview Eugene or Bowen yesterday?!?! =/
name of the rj players in the photos:
An RJC player (in green) holds up the ball against and an Matthew of MJC while his teammate looks on – sean zhong holding the ball, woo han looking on

RJC’s goal-scoring hero Wang Bowen – it is actually eugene ong, not bowen.

hey excuse you, yes you who call yourself the RJC student.
If we have named the scoring player wrong, maybe you would like to help us instead by telling us the correct name of that kid?
thanks.
name printing would be cool. like clubs. and more expensive tho..
i hope that RJ’s performance in the finals has really convinced AJCurvaNord of RJ’s attacking brand of football. the reason why he probably thought RJ as a defensive was the lousy CCAB pitch during the semis. but the national stadium provided a perfect pitch and space for RJ to execute their passing game.
and well done to MJC too.
excuse me, you got the scoring person wrong in the pic above!
Meridian #12 is Dong Hao, not Tong Hao. haha. (: just a note!
Thanks for the name updates.
Of course it’s tiresome. But no way for us to tell because there are no numbers in front.
Something for all teams to consider when they choose their jersey designs next year.
Having numbers facilitates name reporting. Unless you want us to show only the back of your heads.
Lets give them names ya? Reading Mj player MJ player is quite tiresome…lets start with the 1st pic..
That’s #3 Matthew btn the 2 RJ boys and that’s #22 Akmal looking on
#7 Guo Guang doing the tackle
#7 Guo Guang (again)
#21 Mahdi
An MJC player(#12 Tong Hao) tries to go past an RJC player
Everybody gone kung fu fighting…” An RJC player tries to avoid a kung fu move from an MJC player (i think tt’s #19 Jiamin)
n MJC player(#21 Mahdi) tries to weave in and out among two RJC players
quite a nice case of adaptive football on raffles part. I thought they were very defensive until I saw this final, and they took the game to MJC.
had MJC also played the passing game, they would have had held on with at least an equaliser. but the high balls gave them a 50-50 chance of either clearing too wide or not meeting their no 7. RJC had the destiny on their hands with a clearly good chemistry between players and a blistering attacking football.
A good final with a awesome atmosphere.
Both teams had done well to reach the final. But i believe MJ’s loss could be due to their loss of Gughan their defensive hardman. In the final, MJ’s defense could not handle RJC’s relentless attacks without an effective “Roy Keane” to protect them. Also, MJC’s strikers seems unable to hit any target with only a few exception shots that, although on target, are not powerful enough to beat RJC’s keeper.
On the other hand, RJC had done well to control from the game from the midfield and start attacks on the flank. Their only goal was a clear indication of the chemistry between the players. Congratulations to RJC for the win!!!
It is not by pure luck that both teams reach the finals and thus our MJC soccer boys should not be too depressed. Well done MJC !!!
MJC keeper is Wei Wen. Not Khairi.
Well done to both teams. Those at the national stadium who withnessed the historic match will know how hard both teams fought. Kudos to the guys who fell but stood up again, withstood the pain and continued fighting for the schools.
Congrats to RJC and well done to MJC soccer boys=) In the name of soccer, both teams did well =)
