Jalan Besar Stadium, Friday, May 25, 2007 – St Andrew’s Junior College picked up their second championship for the year when their girls’ football team pipped strong favourites and defending champions Victoria Junior College 1-0 for the National ‘A’ Division Girls Football Championship title.
Played out on the USD625,000 artificial turf of Jalan Besar Stadium, one tends to wonder if it was the ‘A’ Division Boys or the Girls who actually felt luckier this year. The atmosphere in Jalan Besar was equally lively and exciting, complete with a ‘Master of Ceremony’ and his funky hip-hop music – and of course, the boisterous cheers of the supporters from both camps.
It had been a relatively uneventful first half, as both sides ran hard to defend their goal box and even harder to create plays on the offensive ends, but all the efforts resulted in zilch.
The one and only goal of the match came rather unexpectedly to all in the stadium and especially devastatingly to the Victorians sometime in the middle of the second half. Victorians had defended their turf tightly and chased the Saints down as they made their attack, forcing Saints’ #10 Maria Daud Rowe to send a long but too light pass from the right flank to her striker sprinting ahead. In what was supposed to be an easy moment with no real threat from the offense but turned out to be a few horrifying seconds instead, the goalie ran forward in an attempt to clear the ground ball but completely missed the kick! She turned her head as the ball rolled right past her, just in time to watch in horror as the lurking Saint striker pounced on the blunder and immediately sprinted forth to push the ball into goal.
A stunned moment later, the gallery broke into wild cheers when the Saints realized a goal had been scored in their favour.
The Victorians picked up their crestfallen spirits soon enough to launch into relentless attacks, hoping to find a goal to level the game. With her well-taken free kicks and corner kicks, #10 Kuan Ren created plenty of shooting chances for her strikers within the penalty area but the Saints’ defense was also a force not to be undermined.
Once again, it was only a matter of time, before the final whistle was finally blown.

Editor’s note: We might have gotten some names wrong, and also if you do recognize yourselves or any of your friends in these pictures, do drop us a note in the "Comments" section and we’ll update the captions accordingly. Thanks!
VJ’s ang kuan ren ( #10) is the most outstanding player again for 08! where vj faced sa again. (:
#10 for saints maria rowe is a really good soccer player.
The report has been amended.
Hope it relates the true account now. Thanks.
Thanks everyone for the correction.
From where i was seated, which was right at the far end furthest from where the goal took place, I honestly thought the VJC defenders were slowing down, thinking their keeper would control the ball.
I might have poor eyes. My bad.
I am going to assume Proud Victorian (: gave a fair view, and I’ll amend the report accordingly.
Thank again.
give credit where it’s due please. it has been reported in today’s football weekly that the goal came from a pass by maria and i quote “Collecting the ball in the middle of the park, St Andrews’ star Maria Rowe threaded a ball through for striker Beatrice Chong to chase.”
nice face in the 8th picure maria!
I LOVE MARIA! (:
No it wasnt a backpass.. it was Maria who passed the light ball while our last man was running to close her down. Our keeper misjudged and failed to kick the ball and SA capitalised.
Thanks for the pictures.
7th picture: The girl brutally brought down in Kuan Ren from VJC. Poor girl, became the victim of several brutal attacks by the saints.
Congrats to the saints for winning it this year. You have only borrowed what is rightfully ours and we will get it back next year.
That being said, i am proud of the VJ soccer girls. They exemplified the VJ spirit and fought on till the last wistle. Great job girls. Keep your heads up high.
P.S Kuan Ren of VJC is Most Outstanding playing and Maria of SA is the top scorer. so congrats to the two again!

hello. I realised that many of the SAJC players’ names were not mentioned in the pictures. So here:
Pic 1: Sherlyn (18)
Pic 3: Zhi En
Pic 6: Rynette
Pic 9: Zhi En
Pic 10: Ying Qi
Pic 11: Zee Hui (left) and Rynette (right)
Pic 12: Emily (7) and Melanie (1)
From the video, looks like the vj keeper misjudged the back pass. I think the report will stand as it is. Thanks for the video links, folks.
that was what i saw from the stands that is
hmm, i thought it was a backpass and hence the goalkeeper could not pick it up. she kicked but miskicked it so that SA player managed to get the ball past her and scored.
i am not from vj or sa. lol i think we need a third person. haha
I guess maybe you could judge it better here?

Hi all. Thanks for the name updates as well as the correction regarding how the goal was scored.
Could I get another account of the goal from the VJC perspective before I change it?
I presume (: is from SAJC.
Hello Shaun and Huey Ying,

Last photo: KEKE it wasn’t cheering actually… Before the match, as we were running out of the tunnel, we shook our other team mates’ hands and jumped up to touch VJ flag (:
There’s still another chance next year and I’m sure VJSG will fight even harder 😀 But well done to SA for taking their chances.

“The Victorians had defended their turf tightly and turned over the ball possession from the Saints, sending the ball to their goalie for a goal kick.”
The goal was scored not from a victorian backpass, but it was SAJC’s #10 Maria Daud Rowe, who passed a long ball forward to the goalscorer from the right flank/near halfwayline.
Nice game girls (:
Superb pictures and story !
Hey you both are getting better and more pro..all the time.
Thanks.
