Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, July 18, 2007 – Zachary Devaraj of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) came from behind to win the C Division 1,500m Final in a time of 4 minutes, 37.37 seconds at the recent 48th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships. His previous best time was 4:51.
Sumanthiran S/O Selvarajoo of St Joseph’s Institution was the early leader although Zachary stuck close to him. This situation remained unchanged until the 1,000m mark when Jonathan Low of ACS(I), together with Zachary, overtook Sumanthiran to go first and second in the race.
Things got interesting when Keith Tan of Singapore Sports School decided he would then make his move when he overtook both the ACS boys to lead for about 200m. However, with 200m to go in the race, Zachary, who is in Secondary 1, staged his fightback to overtake Keith who had no answer for the final stretch. Sumanthiran of SJI eventually finished second in 4:38.55 while Keith was third in 4:38.91. Jonathan Low was sixth in 4:42.70.

i’ve raced with him 😀
being new to the Singapore track and field scene since i just joined this year, zachary has really amazed me
knowing that he’s been at it since sec 1 is just superb.. to clock below 4:40 at the age of 13 is some achievement..
at the all-comers meet, his time of 4:11 had me out of my seat.. it was simply beautiful..i dont think i could ever pace myself like that..racing with him is life threatening :D.. he is probably the 2nd best junior middle-d runner i have seen.. his pace and kick is just amazing.. with the right guidance and training he’ll be a challenger for sea games gold soon..
If you’ve seen Zachary Devaraj run, you’ll agree that he is poetry in motion. I enjoy watching him run. 🙂
Yes ,Zachary did not receive any coverage in local papers. For Zach to win being only sec is a great achievement.THANK YOU RED SPORTS for capturing this and so many other school sports events. It was great you also highlighted by names a few other runners in the event too.I am sure this site will grow to be the premiere site for school sports.
