James Ting of Victoria Junior College cleared 4.20m to win the pole vault gold at this year’s Inter-School Track & Field Championship.
Facing the harsh midday heat, the boys relentlessly challenged themselves, raising the mark with each successful clearance. By the 4.10m mark, there were only 3 competitors left - James Ting of VJC, Dominic Chan of Raffles Junior College and Thomas Chiang of Hwa Chong Institution. Exuding confidence, James began the competition at the 4m mark which set him apart from the rest of the competition. As the only competitor to clear the 4.20m mark, James went after the championship record of 4.32m but failed to clear on all 3 attempts.
Dominic Chan of RJC won the silver with a clearance of 4.10m. Thomas Chiang also cleared 4.10m but had to settle for a bronze based on competition rules.

Editor’s note: I’m uncertain as to why Thomas Chiang had to settle for a bronze. If anyone can let the rest of us know why, please feel free to share the info in the comments section. Thanks.
yup its on count back.. thomas only cleared the height at the last attempt while dominic cleared it in the 1st attempt
Yes, I thought that might be the case but I wasn’t 100% on that.
Thanks for your comments.
I would think it’s probably based on countback, i.e. how many attempts Thomas Chiang took to clear 4.10m and if he cleared it in the same number of attempts as Dominic Chan, then the countback would continue for their earlier attempts.
