Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 – Catholic High came back from one set down to beat Zhonghua Secondary 2-1 to clinch the Volleyball C Division Championship title.
Wednesday, April 9, was the biggest match of this semester for the C Division teams of both schools. Catholic High, with wins under their belt against Balestier Hill, Chong Boon and Zhonghua during the preliminary stage, plus a tough victory over Fairfield Methodist in the semi-final, were all fired up against Zhonghua who beat favourites Ang Mo Kio in their semi-final to set up this exciting clash.
In the best-of-three-sets match, both teams started of by trading points with each other. With the Catholic High players a bundle of nerves, it was no wonder the coach made an early substitution when he replaced Clarence Cheang (#8) with Darius Seow (#12), a Secondary 1 student.
Darius did not disappoint as he made several smart plays during the set. However, Zhonghua, the more confident of the two teams, eventually won the first set 27-25.
During the interval, Mr Lee, principal of Catholic High stepped forward to give the players some words of encouragement. Bouyed by his presence, the boys took to the court with greater determination and won the second set comfortably.
The third set was a much more even affair with both teams performing to their level of play. In a make-or-break set, Catholic High was visibly the stronger attacking team and Zhonghua was on the back foot most of the time.
They briefly threatened to overcome their points deficit until Catholic High called for a time-out. The break disrupted Zhonghua’s momentum and Catholic High went on to win the set and the C Division South Zone Champions trophy.
