A reader has kindly put this together for everyone’s benefit. Readers have said that the voting is more a popularity contest. Any vote will always have an element of that. In any case, the aim of this vote, in line with the mission of this site, was to bring our vibrant sports scene to light and given the sheer number of comments for this voting, we think that’s been achieved.
So whether this is the best 15 or not, let’s remember that they are fellow Singaporeans. If some of them move on to represent the nation one day, we hope that their appearance in the top 15 made an encouraging difference in their journey to that high honour.
Red Sports. Always Game.

Total Voters: 742
This maybe the top voted 15, but many are voted not for their skills, but like uncle Les cited , for other reasons.
Hence, they are not ‘the dream team’., just best voted players.
Some of the SAJC players are like 1-2 years older than their peers la!
Nonetheless, for whatever reason they are there, CONGRATZ and hope those who will still be playing rugby next year, to take the sport to greater heights.
here is the top 15,the dream team
#1 Carlos (prop, sajc)
#2 Arthur Lim (hooker, sajc)
#3 David Tambunan (prop, sajc)
#4 Jegathesan s/o Thanebal (lock, sajc)
#5 Sam Teo (lock, sajc)
#6 Daniel Lum (flanker, sajc)
#7 Timothy Gay (flanker, acsi)
#8 Kenn Wong (no.8, sajc)
#9 Chan MIng Qi (scrumhalf, sajc)
#10 Farid (flyhalf, sajc)
#11 Sirhan (winger, sajc)
#12 Jesse Quek (in-centre, sajc)
#13 Blandon Tan (out-centre. acsi)
#14 Abel Teo (winger, sajc)
#15 Mohamed Fadhil (fullback, acjc)
Farid is a Standoff, David Tambunan wore no.4 jersey at finals
So would anyone like to go through the poll and let me know who the top 15 are by position according to the votes when the voting ends at midnight june 3?
u. les
why not have a first 15 vs second 15 like the soccer poll. they’re trying to arrange such a match if im not wrong. sounds cool aye.
John Yeo from ACSI #4 second row.
He and the other jumper dominated the lineouts during the Cup Finals.. Awesomeeeeee
every team has good players and its undeniable they trained hard and made much sacrifices for the sport.
everyone is entitled to their opinion. And in mine, ACSI is undoubtedly the best. Not just in terms of individual skills and fitness, but their teamwork and reading of the game as with their crisp passing, is just phenomenal.
Their amazing dedication, hardwork and passion for rugby has awed many of their supporters.
We wish them the greatest BLESSINGS.
Also to all ruggers, may your future be bright and BLESSED!
And the great de bait continues…
I personally think that in terms of individual skills and fitness, ACS I was the better all round team this year.
But in terms of grit and team skills – then the micro units from SAJC, ACJC and RJC were excelled – i.e, front 5 from SA, halfbacks from ACJC and the 2nd rows of RJC.
ACJC and RJC are in all honesty teams in transition – ACJC with coaches and the like, and RJC with players.Like all good teams, transition will upset the ‘flow’ and performance short term, but long term a good foundation will bear fruit.
I’ve been to a couple of games and I don’t particularly support any school but its pretty obvious that ACJC is actually better than SAJC. ACJC didn’t play up to standard during their game against SAJC and that was obvious too. Thats not to say that SA’s not good, its just that from my observations AC’s better in terms of skill.
“….but from an unbiased point of view, i truly think the whole sa pack deserve the recognition. they really played some awesome rugby throughout the whole season, consistently.the 40m maul against acjc was the icing on the cake. ”
Like RI old boy said, it was luck u guys got to the finals.
And more luck SA didnt meet RJC in the semis…
And most luck, when ACJC didnt play up to their mark .
But SAJC was most UNLUCKY to meet their greatest rival and NEMESIS—-ACSI
I think more wud agree ACSI has the best forward pack. No denying.
Read thru the posts, 1 eg. fm ‘rugby, 30April’
If based on this season, particularly the finals, then I must say ACSI hooker #2 turned in a better performance than SA hooker.
Both being captains, while 1 led his team to victory and jubilation, the other in consolation and comfort.
no offence, but i disagree with u neutral fan.my team of the season is
1.David Tambunan
2.Arthur Lim
3.Carlos Tan
4.Jegathesan
5.Sam Thio
6.Daniel Lum
7.Darrell Low
8.Kenn Wong
9.Ian Gan
10.Shane Gan
11.Joshua Renee
12.Jesse Quek
13.Blandon Tan
14.Khairulanwar
15.Abel Teo
i know the whole forward pack is from sa, but from an unbiased point of view, i truly think the whole sa pack deserve the recognition. they really played some awesome rugby throughout the whole season, consistently.the 40m maul against acjc was the icing on the cake. whereas, for the backline, i think acsi deserve most of the credit here. they played exceptional rugby the whole season, through to the finals.but i have to give credit to abel teo and jesse quek, i thought they were the most outstanding from the saint’s backline.hence, i know different people have their different views, but this is the team whom i truly think is the best of 2008.
i think it comes to a point where on one hand we have to give credit to a handful of SA players who are in the top 15 and deserve to be there, but the other SA players don’t deserve to be there. On the other hand many more ac and rj should be in there, and a good mix between sa,ac, and rj. Watching from this season 2008, let me give you a personal unbiased view of my top 15.
1 David Tambunan
2 Arthur Lim
3 Anwar
4 Kevin Neo
5 Jegathesan
6 Kenn Wong
7 Tim Gay
8 Arnold Chen
9 Ian Gan
10 Shane Gan
11 Joshua Renee
12 Jesse Quek
13 Blandon Tan
14 Khairulanwar
15 Abel Teo
7 ACSians, 6 Saints, 2 Rafflesians(no offence to Rj though)
what say you?
fruit seller, SA has absolutely nothing for the other 3 rugby powerhouses to be jealous about.
Sigh…….’sour grapes’ ???
Dont let this figment of imagination delude you.
voting is just a form of popularity contest… it dosen rilli mean how well one plays… of course it does a bit but ultimately its a one-sided opinion… true skill is shown on e field…
Fruit Seller,
It’s not sour grapes, it is too obvious that most of the voting, SA voted for themself.
Anyway, this voting isn’t important at all. I’m sure the other schs players are not
interested too. Hee!
A classic example of sour grapes. hah!
Uncle Les :quote “…….Some will vote based on player skills alone, some on friendship, and some on school ties.
Some people mobilise others to vote. ” unquote
SA fan says : “However, it is more of a popularity contest. And SAJC players are toping the table. Shows that they won the hearts of most people/ neutrals. One doesn’t need to be a champion to encourage and inspire others.
Maybe in rugby terms sajc lose out to asci a bit. But the results here shows that many prefer to see sajc players in action. ”
I say ” to each his own ”
And i agree with uncle Les, probably a case of mobilization.
“…..many prefer to see sajc players in action…”(even neutrals)????———-a classic case of delusion!!!!!!!!
Let me tell you with no offence, AC family prefers watching each other and their juniors play
I cant speak for Raffles, but I suspect they rather watch their B Div, which is good.
By all means SA, support your own.
Just a cheeky thought ; wonder how the votes will swing if ACS mobilises their 6 schools to vote???—–no opposition will stand a chance. HAHAHA!
But hey, ACSians and Rafflesians imprint the gold in their hearts, not shirts.
Any how ( i mean anyway ), CONGRATZ to all players nominated, esp the top ( by SA fan ‘s own admission, not necessarily the best ) 15.
Like someone mentioned earlier, true sportsmen go beyond words, they let actions speak.
I guess ACSians and Rafflesians are more interested in hitting their books now.
Cheers
SA fan …”.However, it is more of a popularity contest. And SAJC players are toping the table. Shows that they won the hearts of most people/neutrals. One doesn’t need to be a champion to encourage and inspire others.”
“Maybe in rugby terms sajc lose out to asci a bit. But the results here shows that
many prefer to see sajc players in action””……..
Please lah……. Are you bluffing or consoling yourself ? What kind of skills sajc
has that many prefer to see them in action. lol…
One thing is for sure. This voting may not truely reflect the best players in terms of skills.
However, it is more of a popularity contest. And SAJC players are toping the table. Shows that they won the hearts of most people/ neutrals. One doesn’t need to be a champion to encourage and inspire others.
Maybe in rugby terms sajc lose out to asci a bit. But the results here shows that many prefer to see sajc players in action.
cheers
