When I was in primary school, I read the newspapers every day without fail. Before you think I had a keen interest in world and social issues at such a young age, it was only the sports pages that I read. Then, we had great coverage on local soccer as we were in the Malaysia Cup. I could name every one of the 18 players, regulars and reserves. At the age of 6, I started to attend soccer matches at the National Stadium, joining in the Kallang Roar. Our local soccer coaches and players were our heroes.
The media could do a lot to promote local sports. I know many have provided more pages for sports and local news. But like many, I am at times puzzled by the type of sports news that make the headlines. That said, compared to the past, there is certainly more emphasis on local sports.
Do you think more can be done by the media today? What are your views?

Local Media?
Has there been an emphasis on local sports by local media?
There is an increase interest from the local media for sports in Singapore but for more of the ‘bigger’ news it has been for all of the wrong reasons.
Political conflicts within NSAs, disagreements with sports committee members or with management personnel. All these and more come under media scrutiny more than once.
The local media perhaps to play a role in development of sports is to play an active interest in the sports community at large in Singapore. Doing active research on sports participation on perhaps certain sectors or sports to develop a growing interest. Any news involving sports or ads which may cultivate an interesting storyline to follow up with as a lead to increase an overall exposure to sports in general for Singaporeans.
With the nearing of the YOG, its time the local media also added its research and development into understand local sports and the sports being played in singapore instead of sitting back and waiting for emails or faxes of sports results to come in.
Waiting for advertisers of sports providers to send them a copy ad to advertise in their media. Its time they started to sit up and develop a genuine interest in human development and sports as a lead up to the YOG games.
Better late than too late and never at all.
Alot of the news i hear are passed through word of mouth. i personally dont feel the media is doing much either. last time even with Singapore in the M-league, there were still small reports on certain local matches. Geylang united la… Tiong Baru la…. you could see all the results of ALL the sport that happened the day before. sadly i have not seen it improve from there.
Maybe a small column or better still, at least one whole page could be attributed to the local sports scene. And at the bottom of each article could be the website on where they can find more info with regard to that particular sport in Singapore.
Its not that we dont want to read about it, its more of we dont know where to go to read about it.
besides this… i feel there is too much emphasis on SOCCER…. there are other sports as well which are not featured. Basket ball, Volleyball, Hockey, Netball, Track and Field! and so on…..SO many… but all the news papers mainly focus on… SOCCER…… Soccer….. soccer….
Yes we can name the National soccer team players… but ask about the other sports national teams? bet not many can even name one player….. Must they only be a success for them to be reported? why not just report on the match they played… be it a win or a loss.
i think redsports is doing a great job, maybe we should push redsports as the common medium for sports news nationwide.
SINGAPORE SHOULD COVER AND PROMOTE MORE OF THE SPORTS SCENE! ITS ONE OF THE IMPORTANT THINGS WE MUST DO AS A SINGAPORE WHO IS ABOUT THE HOST THE YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES!
Oh yeah, I forgot. I just added it. Thanks, jun wei. : )
What about the TV? =)
