Kallang Squash Centre, Wednesday, June 11, 2008 – The Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat Raffles Junior College 3-2 to clinch the National A Division Squash Championship title last week.
The A Division Squash Championship had ground to a complete halt when another school protested to the organisers over Bryan Koh’s eligibility. The bizarre complaint was that Bryan was too young.
Bryan Koh was given the go-ahead to play and it was thus poetic justice for ACS(I) when Bryan eventually won the deciding fifth game 3-0 to help ACS(I) retain the overall championship title. ACS(I) had started out strong, racing to an overall 2-0 lead before RJC clawed back to win the next two matches to tie the score at 2-2.
Most of the time, the concern is with over-aged players. For good reason. Nobody wants to see a physically older player take advantage of a younger player at age-group level. However, in this instance, Bryan Koh, who turns 16 in September this year, is at least one or two years younger than his opponents in a non-contact sport.
If he’s good enough, he’s old enough.
